Implementing catch shares in U.S. fisheries resulted in one of the greatest conservation home-runs in American history, and proof of what’s possible when solutions are built with the communities they affect.

Today, chefs are part of the lineup helping carry that progress forward. They’re the bridge between docks and dinner plates, shaping demand for responsibly harvested seafood, which is often the local, abundant catch from right here in the U.S.

This incredible progress is the result of decades of collaboration to restore U.S. fisheries and sustain the communities that depend on them.

If you know me, you know I’ve always loved seafood. After more than two decades working to protect our oceans, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come: Now, I can order Pacific groundfish or red snapper and know it’s part of a success story.

First the high-seas treaty, now Motion 035—global ocean governance is working with the science. In encouraging momentum for ocean health, this vote recognizes the need to safeguard the mesopelagic until we fully understand its role in climate and ecosystem resilience.
