At a time when many are looking for inequitable systems to dismantle, perhaps few are as blatant in their objective to entrench generational & racial inequality as legacy admissions. Here's a thread on a few other folks who are advocating to end it, and how you can help.

Legacy admissions are an institutionalized form of unearned advantage for students who are already starting out way ahead of the game, Alex Seeskin writes.

"One place to start is to pressure IL Congress members to support a new bill that would prohibit colleges who receive federal financial aid from offering legacy preference," suggests @ASeeskin. Read about who's advocating & easy ways to get involved. ⬇️ https://t.co/e8ULAM0Jnm

.@NorthwesternU, get ahead of the Fair Admissions for Students Act & end #LegacyAdmissions because it's right, not because it's the law. Advocacy orgs like @EdReformNowUSA, students, & alumni—including those who graduated as legacy students like me—have been waiting far too long.

You can advocate, too. Many have contacted their Congress members & demanded they support the Fair College Admissions for Students Act. Others have tweeted or emailed their alma mater demanding they end #LegacyAdmissions. Others have withheld their donation. Do what feels right.

This is all to say, many are advocating loudly, like @OtherVietNguyen, who's playing a part in this legislation. He's a trustee emeritus of @BrownUniversity, the president of which supports legacy admissions, but said Brown would comply with changed law. https://t.co/14GgfJ8tRZ

Excited to publish my first op-ed on legacy preferences in the Boston Globe. The answer to higher education’s exclusivity and homogeneity is not to create an elite lineage of people of color, but rather to increase access to those most marginalized within our communities.

#LegacyAdmissions can take up to 10-25% of available slots at top universities. The Fair College Admissions for Students Act introduced by @RepBowman and @SenJeffMerkley would impose financial penalties for colleges & universities who maintain this unfair privilege.

.@RickKahlenberg, senior fellow at @TCFdotorg, recommended this policy nearly 4 years ago in response to a call from the Senate education committee. If you're curious, he provides more background info. on legacy admissions & federal interest in the issue. https://t.co/Xod3oulnKR

Students and alumni are also "pledging to withhold their donations until the legacy preference is dropped,” noted @M_Dannenberg1 in a recent @insidehighered article. A quick email or social media post can also go a long way, @UChicagoAlumni and @NUAlumni. https://t.co/eK6OqNzbY8

If wealthy colleges won’t act on their own, then Congress, states, municipalities, and corporate & philanthropic donors should impose financial repercussions on those that willfully choose to perpetuate inequity. Pinching the wallet focuses the mind. https://t.co/ERv2n6uqLJ

Pressure your Congress members to support the bill introduced by Rep. @JamaalBowmanNY and @SenJeffMerkley (Oregon) last week. The Fair College Admissions for Students Act would deny federal financial aid to colleges offering legacy admissions preferences. https://t.co/h45wk0nTbN

Our study showed the normative path thru #college isn't typical for @ChiPubSchools grads. Their paths define a different normal, & it inspired us to seek out their stories. We'll share 5 this week. How'd students define a new normal to you this year? Read: https://t.co/njByaXXtlh
