I had the honour of delivering the welcome address at the second edition of the African Public Square @APS_ALC Debates and the Experts’ Meeting on Alternative Futures for ECOWAS (@ecowas_cedeao) at 50, co-hosted by the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement

Delighted to speak at #AfricanPublicSquare in Abuja, Nigeria, on the future of regional groupings like ECOWAS and SADC, urged Africans to beware that AI can be weaponised to subvert democracy by some governments. Finding and imposing safeguards is prudent.

At 50 @ecowas_cedeao and Africa at large should transcend beyond debating the need for women involvement in decision making on issues that affect them. Gender equality should be seen as a fight against harmful gender norms, harmful practices and not a fight against men.

ECOWAS is under strain, but we should never forget how much it has achieved over 50 years — peace missions, free movement, and robust norms on democracy and governance. A true embodiment of Pan-Africanism and a key pillar of the @_AfricanUnion, we need more @ecowas_cedeao, not
