As a minor detail, contrary to the statement below, in air ops at sea one does not always recover with sufficient fuel to divert to an alternate. I’ve seen the contrary planned and executed often. At sea if the local weather is poor one can move the air base, unlike on land.
Air operations at sea cannot always guarantee a safe recovery, either through an incident on deck or poor weather making a landing dangerous/impossible. For that reason you always recover with sufficient fuel to divert to an alternate (usually a land base).🧵1/4.

Things are bad in Britain in many ways. Europe’s long-standing senior ally, the United States, is distancing itself from European commitments.

Suggesting that a carrier deployment has inertia when land based airfields are static and the task group’s ships can alter course by 180 degrees in around six minutes is a level of chutzpah that I only aspire to.
3/ When the decision was made to commit to CSG25, we had little idea how things would evolve in Gaza, Iran, Yemen, India/Pakistan or even the US. The intertia inherent in a deployment like this means having to ride out the circumstances rather than influencing them by choice.

An interesting article, much of which is relevant to the UK's circumstances.
So the RAN doesn’t feel unloved about putting missiles where they weren’t ( here's my new piece for Lowy proposing arming and expanding an Australian Merchant Navy: The TLDR:.- the proposal is to have ships lightly equipped for.

The United Kingdom has agreed for Mauritius to have sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago. I think this is strategically dangerous, and should be reviewed.
