As a minor detail, contrary to the statement below, in air ops at sea one does not always recover with sufficient fuel to divert to an alternate. I’ve seen the contrary planned and executed often. At sea if the local weather is poor one can move the air base, unlike on land.

Air operations at sea cannot always guarantee a safe recovery, either through an incident on deck or poor weather making a landing dangerous/impossible. For that reason you always recover with sufficient fuel to divert to an alternate (usually a land base).🧵1/4.

Suggesting that a carrier deployment has inertia when land based airfields are static and the task group’s ships can alter course by 180 degrees in around six minutes is a level of chutzpah that I only aspire to.

3/ When the decision was made to commit to CSG25, we had little idea how things would evolve in Gaza, Iran, Yemen, India/Pakistan or even the US. The intertia inherent in a deployment like this means having to ride out the circumstances rather than influencing them by choice.

I will never write as well as Giles. Nor do I care as much about a single word, though the replacement, some years ago, of 'littoral' with 'literal' does still rankle. And I try to be more conciliatory. Still, it's a great (if also wrong) e-mail.

Having just had an article of mine back somewhat mangled by the sub-editor, fortunately in time to catch it, I am reminded of the glorious (and inappropriate) e-mail from Giles Coren complaining about the changing of a word in a piece of his for the Times from 2008.

An interesting article, much of which is relevant to the UK's circumstances.

The United Kingdom has agreed for Mauritius to have sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago. I think this is strategically dangerous, and should be reviewed.
