So...I have a question. Writing this article yesterday has made me wonder if returning to writing would be a good thing. Level with me: if I wrote an article once a month in a long-form style like the last one (with better editing!), would folks be interested enough to read it?

Final point: You can talk about Christ in a sermon and it still not be Christ-centered. If "Christ for pardon" and "Christ for power" isn't proclaimed, it's not Christ-centered preaching. If it doesn't distinguish law and gospel, that ain't it, either!

Thought #3: Preaching that doesn't inform isn't preaching, any more than preaching that doesn't appeal. Why we condemn one extreme while celebrating another is...curious to me.

Thought #2: Experiential preaching isn't being intense in the pulpit. It is "preaching from the heart of the preacher to the heart of his people." (Beeke)

Thought #1: Too often, our discussions of preaching betray a weak understanding of the Spirit's work. The assumption with many is that unless preaching looks and sounds a particular way, it is Spirit-empowered. We might do well to question that assumption and its roots.

I had a few thoughts that didn't make the final cut in my Substack. I'll be scattering them throughout the day after my class this morning.

Day two of my Hermeneutics class today. Yesterday went well. Great class with a lot of hunger for the subject.

One thing I’ve learned and re-learned over the years— If you want to know what a particular preacher or theologian really believed and taught, make sure you give him time to speak for himself, whether in writing or preaching/teaching. Don’t settle for what you hear about him

If a man is called as an elder in a church and, from necessity, gives up the kind ministry that proved his qualification—discipling and counseling others, teaching, evangelizing, etc—for the sake of organizational management, that church’s elder ministry may be broken.

I always find it irritating when guys who don’t bear the long-term responsibility of preaching weekly for a single congregation criticize guys who do. Even if the critique is valid, it’s still like a broadcaster criticizing a coach. It’s easy to find errors, but when there’s no
