I had no idea what proximity to Bollywood could do to you until I landed in Bombay and met colleagues who are married at 27 after being in relationships for 7 years? AND THEN THEY GO HOME TO EAT LUNCH WITH THEIR WIVES ???!!!
I left Instagram for 4 months cause I thought it would make me productive BUT it only made me sad, humourless and someone who takes herself too seriously for her age
Not to forget that I could not communicate with my 23 friends whose and mine love language is memes and reels
The peer pressure of doing outdoor activities is so real. Why are people trying overpriced and underwhelming microflying and vineyard trips etcetera in Bangalore?
And why is trying out a cafe with good aesthetic and average food the Mecca of going out on a weekend? Arghhh

Me : was alcohol and substance use very popular even 20 years ago when you guys grew up?

I downloaded a few dating apps, and funnily enough I have realised that issues like not having enough matches, feeling inauthentic, getting ghosted etc., are all secondary at best.
In a casual conversation with an autowala in Bangalore today,
Me: Bhaiya, have you ever taken a loan?
"Ma'am, jo Bangalore ka original hoga, usko kabhi loan nhi lagega"
Me: Kyun?
"Lakh ka to rent milta hain madam"
The PRIMARY problem to deal with is the fact that there are no good desktop versions available for these apps. No way a well functioning adult would choose to hurt their fingers typing on the phone when they could easily just use a keyboard. Duh.
I know it might be cringe but I really liked the idea of ‘Thought of the day’ as a kid. I was and truly still am in love and in awe of the fact that a good thought has the power to instantly change your mood, your day and your direction
These past few years living away from home I’ve realised (much to mother’s dismay) that no matter what anyone says, life is going to run absolutely fine and everything’s going to be okay even if you never fold your clothes
I often wonder, why, in India,
New Health food companies > Conventional/Junk food companies (think haldirams, lays, nachos)
Given a choice, I would place my bets on the NON-healthy food market, and here’s why
Today, I complete a year at the one and only,
@StellarisVP
:)
While the year has given me the most number of existential crises ever in a given year, I think the learnings I’ve gotten here are nothing short of stardust (pun-intended) served to me on a platter

Not a lot of people in the world care about chocolates, but I do and I would really urge you to attend this event if you want to try good quality home-grown chocolates that are not just Morde (in turn emulsified vegetable oil) in a different cast with a silver foil packing
I have tried over 20 new age Indian chocolate brands and over 100 SKUs in the last ~5 years and the clear winner for me in this category is a Mumbai-based brand called La Folie. 1/n
Mirae Asset has done it for me today.
While I was watching Rocky Rani, the intermission begins and I hear an ad,
‘The movie can’t not progress now, but your future goals can…..with SIP’
I understand dating for men can be challenging, but how do you justify asking a woman you recently went on a date with to set you up with her friends?!
Even if I had not already know about the size of the skincare market in India is, one look at the sheer amount of activity on r/indianskincareaddicts would have convinced me, without any doubt, about the same
It's interesting how, when you're in VC, checking out Linkedin profiles of so many people seems so normal and part of your everyday job.
But as soon as you step out, you realize how the constant scrutiny creates unnecessary self-doubt and diverts your focus from your own journey
I was semi-creeped out but I couldn't help but admire this middle aged man’s confidence to walk up to me on 100 ft road on the pretext of asking for directions before he started to hit on me
i mean uncle who? fear of rejection who? or maybe I look like 30...

Ain’t no form of affection I’ve felt as pure as the one where someone decides to share wired earphones and listen to music together <3

A fun idea me and my friend
@MannGarima
have been discussing for a while is this idea of creating a Reddit-like forum offline where we could pick up on conversations and interesting questions from the site and discuss them irl
All I need, all I really really need is a someone who will give me a tiffin and specific instructions on exactly when to eat what in a 1.5 hour flight. All I need is mom ^^
Have you ever pondered upon the curious case of the 80's Indian dad and his love for struggle?
Due to the bus drivers' strike yesterday and then a string of unfortunate coincidences I was forced to travel in a general class train coach and oh my god how happy my father was..?!
Indian family trip starter pack:
- uncle who will create unnecessary panic about everyone getting late
- uncle 2 who will bore you with life advice
- uncle 3 who will tell all children they can't understand music because they weren't born in "the golden era" of Kishore Kumar
A good way to figure out how you can help a business is by thinking about where you can bring leverage.
Leverage is the ability to affect the trajectory of a business positively through some external force - could be capital, skill, psychological triggers, or relationships.
I thought i was the only one anal enough to show up at the gym in the last week of the year but turns out there are a full 47 of us in Cult Indiranagar alone
Founder: Can we meet today for the retention project?
Me: Working on priority on something acquisition, cannot do earlier than 2H tomorrow
Altaf: Congratulations! Looks like you have really arrived at Traya cause you just turned down the founder’
:p
I was having my weekend banter with myself today and it occurred to me that most stress and anxiety is just FOMO - a fear of missing out on a reality that you’ve already imagined to be true
In my version of being a gen-z, you will have 9 half-finished notebooks and still want a new one because guess what you just discovered a new prompt to write to and every new prompt definitely deserves to have its own physical context and presence in my notebook world
Asked my friend yesterday why she got a credit card,
"Wanted to use CRED rewards"
Asked my maid today why she got a bank account,
"If I have cash, I spend it"
Different consumers, different products, yet the set in stone savings mindset in India that drives consumer behaviour
Received my first d’you order today📦
Love the surprise of a cute magazine in the package - great way to engage your customers and make them feel like they are part of your journey
I'm willing to bet that if the sea of productivity and "take control of your future" guidance were being given by women instead of men, it would overarchingly be about regulating your hormones and NOT about waking up at 5 am
The real societal disadvantages of capitalism accrue not when there is wide spread intent to make money but when it also leads to widespread (dis)intent to not do anything unless it makes you money
Y'all can harp about amaze last minute v day gifts from
@SwiggyInstamart
but did you ever make drawings on your 9th class Gulliver's Travels book in the middle of your math class to impress the one💃🏻
I was thinking about it and you’ll have to agree w me that India’s OG influencer led brand is Patanjali.
Ramdev Baba launched the brand & in no time there was a Patanjali alternative to any & every FMCG product you can think of - Patanjali aata, Patanjali nariyal tel, Dantkanti
Overheard at Indiranagar: Having a co-founder in a passion project helps because it's easier to give up on yourself than giving up on someone else. Um hmm.
I've come to realise that the best way to judge the quality of my year is to ask myself every Dec: "how many cool stories do I have to tell this year?"
When your relatives catch hold of some nasty information about you the trick is to get to your parents (and register your safai) before the relatives do
TIL: How to get influencer rights without being an influencer
This brand I've been a loyal customer to for almost about 2 years now randomly decided to send me free goodies for trial
(Note: Not a VC backed company)
I find it interesting how the Indian psyche is so well calibrated to always bake in expectations of misgivings whenever availing a product or service.
Every time I'd travel with my family, my parents would almost expect a theft to happen as the norm and not the edge case
TIL that Alexander Graham Bell was vastly undersold to me in GK class. Dude was not just an inventor, but an excellent school teacher and the founder of AT&T - a Fortune 500 company which has retained its position as a market leader in telecom for more than a century!!!
"One of my most healing realizations is that the more you cringe about something in your past, the more you must have grown in the interim. Otherwise you wouldn’t cringe!"
A useful ques to think about is whether you'd want to build your career upon a blank slate and craft all elements of your model from scratch, or you'd prefer to build it like Lego, using pieces that already exist by virtue of the first few education and career decisions you made
You would not believe the number of broke students who ask for "value for money" saly-silly, niancini-mini and whatnot on the group - if people want to buy your products as soon as they save their first 200 bucks, you should know that you're in the right market
@rchowdhri
While it is super easy and simplistic to blame everything about our generation and the next on social media, I think one of the main reasons for this disparity is how different our reward and recognition cues were growing up for us vs. our parents
idk how or why but my father for one seems to be 100% sure that all the learning in the world would come to me only if I voluntarily put myself into the blue collar struggle
Me and my friend
@MannGarima
wanted to reminisce about this past year in a way that is not just one long thought interlude - so we came up with a list of what we think are fun questions to look back at the year.
Thought I'd share :
Came across a concise & actionable idea today -
Said what separates a good generalist from a poor one is her ability to become an expert on the user. As non-experts in functional areas, understanding users is likely the most imp place to discover and deliver meaningful value
- There’s no good structural reason to believe that India would skip the growth of the junk food market and directly jump onto the health food market even if we factor the benefits that will accrue to the latter given (1) > health awareness (2) > lifestyle disorders
Remember when we were learning English, our teachers taught us not to repeat is, and, the, that, etc., multiple times in a sentence in order to form more meaningful and precise sentences?
Think it is about time we did the same thing for the golden words "strategy" and "analysis"
(1) As we grow our middle class, the junk food market will become (and remain) much larger first (=a lot of time before before the health food market starts to pick up)
We may live in India's tech hub, but we know how to unplug!
On Sunday mornings, we ditch the devices & hit the streets of BLR for a leisurely walk.
Join us on Sundays at 8 AM as we walk thru Cubbon Park, get some fresh air, & catch up over some breakfast.
#BlrGirlsWhoWalk
All these cafes on the 12th main are packed with rich Jayanagar aunties having a gala lunch and I want to know how to lure them for a product I don't know which
- almost by definition, health trends, and therefore the snack that accompanies them, come as fads - today it’s keto, tomorrow it will be fruit only and day after carnivore - I would leave my current healthy chips brand the moment a new brand can verifiably claim to be healthier
(3) Brand Loyalty - related to repeat behaviour but stands independently too - would you ever trade your fav bhujiya brand of biscuits (Jim jam) for non oily no sugar maltodextrin aspartame only wheat jim jam
If I could get a penny for everytime I read "next generation *x-function* proprietary tech powered by AI" in a company's description, I would be able to afford Indiranagar rents
