Why should psychotherapists have an awareness of history? I spoke about this in relation to working therapeutically with people from minoritised ethnicities recently. Webinar only accessible to @UK_ACP members unfortunately but I'm hoping to do more on this topic in next year
Now available to @UK_ACP #PsychologyOfAgeingNetwork members a fascinating webinar by @AChurchard 'The Importance of Historical Knowledge in Working Therapeutically with Clients from Minoritised Ethnicities'

6/6 All an initial exploration of this area. I think it makes some interesting links and suggests steps that can be taken to improve therapist skill, but I'm keen for feedback and to see if this model could be developed further.

5/6 I've tried to draw on work by @DrMonnica, David Sue, Alex Pieterse among others to bring in the systemic context. And also of course @andrewbeck45 on transcultural CBT

4/6 Core argument: many psychotherapists probably lack the necessary knowledge, practical skills of therapy, and reflective space to work effectively with service users from minoritised ethnicities. Reflection is particularly important, but also more challenging in this context.

3/6 I think that applying the model to how to develop cultural competence / humility provides a helpful theoretical and practical overview. It makes links between different areas (e.g. interpersonal skills and reflection), this leads directly to practical steps to improve skills
