Politicians who later become congressional leaders trade stocks like everyone else ... until they ascend to power. After ascension, their portfolios beat peers by 47 (!!!) percentage points a year through trades timed around bills and firms that later get government contracts.

I joined Cambridge Economics in 2011 as an assistant professor. For historical reasons, Cambridge is still a bastion of heterodox economics - not so much in the department, but definitely in the colleges. (The college structure deserves its own thread.) 1/10

Damn, immigrants outperform everywhere, and for the same reasons. 1.2 million Orthodox Christians were forced to move from Anatolia to Greece in 1923. Their kids outperformed the old Greeks for the usual reasons: emphasis on education, esp medicine & engineering.

The last thing humanity needs is more deep relationships with AIs, even if the AIs are simulating people we loved before they died. This is sick, and this is our lonely future unless we start saying no to it now.

I am super excited to share a new AI tool, Refine. Refine thoroughly studies research papers like a referee and finds issues with correctness, clarity, and consistency. In my own papers, it regularly catches problems that my coauthors and I missed. 1/
