Since then @RossFarmMuseum has been enjoyed by folks from all around the world. The land is still farmed the same way it was for many generations and our staff tell the story of the Ross family and of rural Nova Scotia and its agricultural history.

Five generations of the Ross family lived and grew up here, continuing to farm the land. In 1969 the province of Nova Scotia received donation of the property and its important history and was welcomed into the @NS_Museum family of museums.

Large stumps and the endless amounts of rocks here in the county of Lunenburg made the work of clearing land very challenging. The help of oxen and horses helped them to meet that challenge and allowed families to clear their land and grow much-needed crops.

Being a small settlement deep in the interior of the province they relied heavily on each other to make sure barns got raised, gardens got planted and crops got harvested. There's no doubt this played a very large role in the survival of this community and the Ross family farm.

Unfortunately, William Ross did not get to enjoy the fruits of his labours. In 1821 while attempting to blaze a proposed route to Halifax he was overtaken by a severe storm, became ill, and passed away on May 2, 1822, leaving Mary to manage the farm with help from her children.

In 1817 with axe and whipsaw, they built a frame house which still stands over 200 years later. They named their new home Rosebank. Rations for first settlers were discontinued in 1818 and for later comers in 1820.

The government provided rations of food and rum to the new settlers and tools to build their homes and for working the land. One of the first things they grew were potatoes as they were fairly easy to grow but more importantly kept well during the cold winter months.

They eventually arrived on the lands of Sherbrooke later renamed New Ross. Arriving here with his wife Mary and 4 children, Captain Ross acted as Deputy Surveyor and laid out the lots for his soldiers and using only hand tools built a small log house overlooking Lake Lawson.

The story of Ross Farm starts way back in August of 1816 when newly appointed Captain to the Nova Scotia Fencibles, William Ross, along with 172 other disbanded British soldiers made their way through the thick interior of what is now known as the province of Nova Scotia.
