So, fix the problem, and fix it fast. Stop the posturing and let’s negotiate a trade deal that works for all players. Fix it quietly, efficiently and respectfully. Teddy Roosevelt said “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” Let’s stop doing the opposite.

-or figure out how I am going to get equipment for new employees. Do I need to set up a European subsidiary to continue in business there (expensive)? Do I need to move my hosting service to Europe (expensive)? Not a great use of time or resources.

I’m Co-CEO of @ClockworksCo, a software company that generates ~25% of our revenue outside of the US. Now, instead of spending time trying to make our solutions better, I’m spending time trying to ensure that I’m not going to lose my foreign revenue base to retaliatory tariffs.

I’m of a mindset that there is a better way. Thoughtful negotiations can go a long way towards achieving our objectives. We don’t need to “win”, we need to reach a fair outcome.

If a country has a 25% tariff/trade barrier in place, is it appropriate to respond with a 50% tariff? Aren’t we unnecessarily escalating and inflaming tensions? Do we really think it’s necessary to get “paid back” for years of military protection?.

There is some truth that there are countries who place higher tariffs and other non-tariff trade barriers on our products than we do on theirs. While the goal of fixing this is laudable, the process followed makes little sense.
