This feature was made possible by a decade's worth of work on creating an over-the-air software update service that is reliable, efficient, and battle-tested. Huge props to the engineering team at Particle for getting this out the door!.

Or you can use it to update a co-processor, when you're using Particle primarily as a connectivity module and are running the logic of your prouduct on an attached STM32, RP2040, or (name your favorite MCU).

It's also great for distributing software updates over a local wireless network using something like Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or LoRa.

"Asset OTA" is Particle's version of that same capability. You can now use a Particle device to distribute a bundle of software updates out to other processors. This is great if you're managing a vehicle or a complex machine that has a lot of subcomponents.

Tesla does something very cool with their OTA software updates — they bundle together software updates to subcomponents, and the central processor of the car takes responsibility for distributing those software updates over-the-wire. As a result, Teslas are "software on wheels".

Particle has included OTA as a killer feature of our IoT platform since we launched in 2014. Since then, our users have pushed out about 13 million software updates. We've got the most battle-tested OTA system in IoT, except perhaps for Tesla.

OTA stands for “Over-the-Air”, and generally refers to the ability to remotely update the software on an embedded device over a wireless network. OTA is hard to pull off because any security or reliability problems lead to issues like this:

Last week the media picked up that BMW is charging $18/mo for heated seats in some of its international markets. This is the *wrong* way to add subscriptions to a product. So what's the right way?
