Astronauts use a machine called the advanced resistive exercise device (ARAD) to maintain muscle mass and bone density in space It generates resistance via a piston inside a vacuum tube You can benchpress, deadlift, and squat up to 600lb on it
The Moon is harder than Mars in many ways: higher radiation, much lower gravity (more bone loss), no atmosphere to harvest carbon. If we can crack the Moon, Mars becomes an easier problem.
