As for the piece - I wanted Bloomburrow’s aesthetic to feel like older Magic sets with a stress on texture and tangible mark making, and it was super fun to really go to town with the painting knife!

I knew the set needed a lionhead, and his round body and iconic bad boy spikes were a natural fit to give Bloomburrow some character. I knew him for eleven years and he was a great companion.

One day, deep in concentration on my first Magic painting, I nearly fell out of my chair when the air cut with a bloodcurdling scream behind me – Edward had fallen asleep and tore awake from a nightmare, shrieking. Hopefully his war cry here is deeper but just as terrifying.

Edward started as my wife’s rabbit, from when we started dating. She affectionately called him the monster under the bed. The first time we hung out he didn’t like me and nipped me, but once his room became my painting space and we were in each other’s company more, he warmed.

Gishath and all the dinos here are totally fantasy, but he's based on a giganotosaur (bespiked and and scaled up to 200 feet). I bought way too many plastic PNSO dinosaurs working on this piece (thinly veiled "reference") that camped on my desk at WoTC.

Gishath is actually the left half of a panorama, facing off against Ghalta! @larsgrantwest and I planned back and forth to get it to work. He finished his color study for his marvelous Ghalta piece first, determining my composition and palette (interpreted with some looseness)
