Perhaps the case is the same as Eida not being able to control Omnipotence, Koji is not Otsutsuki so he cannot control Precience which is why his updates come automatically and randomly.
Prescience not being able to see updates in real time is such a huge drawback it's actually kinda insane and makes the "singularity of fate" idea even more important. If Boruto (a singularity; ie a "heretical existence") talking to Kawaki caused the new possibilities to form.
