Best kind of science: have a talented researcher actually take the effort to look at the study subject and realize something others haven't noticed - even though right before their eyes!.

What do mice use their tails for? It’s not as simple as you might think 🐭 New research in @J_Exp_Biol, featuring cute slow-mo videos, demonstrates how mice use their tails for balance – and this may help neuro research down the line 👇.@Salvatore_Lac @yoe.

#SfN24 is allowing late-breaking #poster - and we decided to take part! Me and Ana will be flaunting our piping hot Inferior Olive research on Monday morning, typhoons allowing. Take a break from the #cerebellum session and find us us at LBA4-5!.

So check out our preprint - work led by @b_ignatowska at @OISTedu - and be inspired. What behaviors should we examine next?.

What we found is that not only are all endocannabinoid pathways suppressing locomotion (as you'd think. ), but also whatever effects we see depend on the kind of locomotion at paw - horizontal or vertical!.

Our first proof-of-concept preprint is now out, testing the robustness and precision of the method by tracking mice under influence of pharmacological compounds that selectively enhance one of the two main endocannabinoid signaling pathways.

We wondered, and inspired by the performance of marker-based tracking used in video game industry (hi @remedygames !) and large-animal sports (hi @qualisysab !) we shrank it all down to mouse scale. Check out the videos!.

Do you still think that quantifying mouse behavior while it is walking on a flat surface l is sufficient to give you a comprehensive sampling of the behavioral effects of your manipulation?.

Have you ever wondered what you could do if tracking animal movement during your neuroscience experiment would not require training a machine vision model? If you could just straightforwardly get the trajectories of any mouse moving freely in 3D?.

@JustusKebschull (and other authors whose twitter-handles are not known to me) deserve a standing applaud for managing to synthesize a work of this magnitude. Thank you.

Personally the significance of this work is much higher than might be superficially obvious, but I do hope that our work and illustrations will serve many new researchers as Chan Palay's book did. #StandOnShoulders

45 years later I got the great honor to work with a group of renowned scientists and to compile an "updated" tome on the structures, incorporating massive volumes of knowledge gathered ever since.
