2017 was an eventful year. But one memory stood out: when Darl Synder, a reader, sent me an American Flag in the mail. I was on assignment overseas when I got an email from my equipment manager asking me if I bought a television and had it sent to the office. ⬇️

This is how I want to remember Pierre Zakrzewski.
Big smiles. Fantastic human being. Kind, generous & radiates an upbeat can-do energy. From Kabul to Kyiv, he never stopped wanting to help.
He was found dead alongside Ukrainian journalist, Oleksandra Kuvshynova. RIP
Miss you.

Today, many attended a solemn & emotional mass funeral held for the 10 civilians said to have been killed in a U.S. drone airstrike in Kabul. It was a heartbreaking event for all. 7 children are amongst the dead.

I'm saddened to share this: Darl Synder, the gentleman whose life intersected with mine when he sent me this letter with a flag, passed away in his sleep over the weekend. His family informed me about it. My heart goes out to them.

Day 16 of Russian Invasion: I dread making pictures of destruction during war. By itself, in a photograph, it lacks humanity. Even accompanying it, it overshadows any semblance of life. We document because we must convey. But must it arrive to the point in which humanity is lost?
