Next week, on May 4th, the paperback of BETWEEN TWO FIRES will be published (with a new cover!), a book the NYT called "deep and revealing" and The Economist said is "wonderfully insightful." Hope to get a chance to talk more about it and all things Russia

A new semester means fresh slate of events @Bard_Berlin. First up on Sep 27: a discussion of the politics of memory (or absence and denial of historical memory) in Germany and Russia, and what that means for politics and society today. Berliners, join us!

My story in this week's @NewYorker: on the radical experiment of Marlene Engelhorn, an Austrian heiress who assembled a council of fifty strangers to give away her inheritance.

In a sadly not unimaginable but deeply regrettable turn of events, the Union Club in Frankfurt *cancelled* my talk with @NathanThrall next Tuesday. The good news: we’ll be hosted by the wonderful team at Medico International instead. Join us!

“He needs a certification…Proof he can hold up and say, yet again, ‘The country is behind me.’” My @NewYorker essay on Putin’s reelection this weekend and how two years of war has (and has not) recast Russian politics, society, economy.

For those of you following the war over the last two years, and Ukraine long before that, you know what a gifted, special, and informed voice Nastya is. A rare chance to see her in Berlin on November 28. (And Munich on November 29!)

War, especially a prolonged one with relentless suffering, makes everyone lose their heads. But this is silly and worthy of an apology. @shustry is a professional, judicious, courageous reporter who has been reporting on Ukraine for a decade-plus.

I am fine with dramatization of political life and appreciate narratives that I don't necessarily share, yet it seems that @TIME did let a Russian asset (even if an unwitting one) to profile the Ukrainian president.

In a new book, a Russian journalist attempts to work through how she missed—or failed to adequately react to—Russia’s descent into fascism, @yaffaesque writes.

The rise and fall of Yevgney Prigozhin is one of the signal tales of the Putin era: ambition, brutality, cynicism, a system losing its centrifugal force and trying to retain it at all costs. My postscript on the founder of Wagner for @NewYorker:

The long, gruesome story of Wagner, from Ukraine to Africa and the oil fields of Syria and back to Ukraine again, where it sent thousands of convicts into the "meat grinder." And then, fatefully, on the march to Moscow. My piece in this week's @NewYorker:
