"School is for preparing you for entry into society and the world of work" — okay, then why is it structured so much like a system that does the absolute opposite of that?

It's so obvious that people assume everyone in prison is some caricatured villain, rather than predominantly being society's most vulnerable, who we subject to psychological torture and isolation, only to release about 1000 a month into homelessness.

(Long thread clear indicator of being rattled, which is true, but not all directed at OP — the past three months of my life have been a fucking nightmare and the heartbreak and rage has no real outlet. I quit my job to write love letters full time to keep my partner sane.)

Your tired political idioms actually became so popular because they express horrors that take the mask off the structures you also claim to critique. When that horror is lost on you, you need to raise that consciousness some more, bro.

The fact that THAT is recognisably structurally similar to SCHOOL sounds wild, I know, but the theorybro mind cannot comprehend plenty of the material conditions it purports to care about — shocker!

The prison-industrial complex represents the rotten core of our civilization, far more so than the people locked inside it. It is where we erase the humanity of people who've done "wrong", but the humanity of all involved in that is not left unscathed.

I can't talk about what my partner and I are going thru right now. I won't be able to for a long time. But I'll tell you all about my sense of what prison is like. Everyone I'm in this situation with has had their mind completely blown by it.

"School is like prison" isn't just an argument for education reform. Feel the true weight of that statement, the reality it speaks to, and it's the seed of an idea for starting this whole fucking shitshow over from scratch, honestly.

Prison is the same. It's the extreme exacerbation of everything shit about modern life. The punishment? Everything you already know but no illusion of your own freedom. Get up close to the prison system & see if it doesn't radicalise you about how fucked we are out here too.

Look at it this way. Why ACAB? Cos no situation has ever been improved by a cop's presence. They're a source of antisociality, indicative of the thing they're meant to counter.

It's a loveless place that breeds mental health crises, which often go ignored, undermining everything that might actually make a person feel like they have something to live for, and we've normalised it to the point of never questioning the horror it represents.

Everyone who goes into prison comes out worse. It decimates life, our social being. My partner is inside for protest, but spends every day with people who've done some pretty bad things. It doesn't matter. They find humanity with and care for each other.

Some still missing point here, cos not knowing what prison is a pervasive blind spot. Why can we agree school sucks & obsess culturally about antisocial problems it incubates, but prison, which is worse & less fit for purpose, is fine cos bad people deserve psychological torture?

I'm not even a Foucauldian btw. I've just gotten to know the prison system up close recently, & you gotta hand it to him. It's become so jarring recently to watch vague debates around disciplinarity & punishment amongst people with no direct experience of its sharpest point.

This is the thing: if people knew how horrifying these truism are, not just as a "correct idea" but actually had their consciousness raised high enough to see what it *means*, I'd hope people would do more. You've successfully interpreted the world; are you gonna try change it?

I followed all the prison abolition op-eds a few years ago, I was leftist enough to tacitly agree. But holy shit – now? It's the most inhumane & ineffective system of supposed "rehabilitation", & that it feels like school is so damning for how we educate people.

But still so surreally RECOGNISABLE. It would fuck your head, I guarantee.

Like, yeah, it's a truism. But I guarantee you would be shocked by just how true it is, and how unfit for purpose too. Take your memories of how dramatic high school is, how bad people's mental health is, how arbitrary its disciplinary edicts, how boring — prison is 1000x worse.

Having visited my partner in prison weekly since Sept, "Foucault was right" has become a running joke as we talk about how accurate it is and how prison *is* an exaggerated version of high school. It's honestly shocking how institutional discipline resonates across sectors.
Foucaldians tweeting shit like "School is prison btw" is like if there was a marxist account who would just post shit like "the bourgeoisie exploit the proletariat" like we get it dude you've read the book, I've read the book, everyfuckingone has read the book, say something new
