Everyone who goes into prison comes out worse. It decimates life, our social being. My partner is inside for protest, but spends every day with people who've done some pretty bad things. It doesn't matter. They find humanity with and care for each other.

I followed all the prison abolition op-eds a few years ago, I was leftist enough to tacitly agree. But holy shit – now? It's the most inhumane & ineffective system of supposed "rehabilitation", & that it feels like school is so damning for how we educate people.

Like, yeah, it's a truism. But I guarantee you would be shocked by just how true it is, and how unfit for purpose too. Take your memories of how dramatic high school is, how bad people's mental health is, how arbitrary its disciplinary edicts, how boring — prison is 1000x worse.

Having visited my partner in prison weekly since Sept, "Foucault was right" has become a running joke as we talk about how accurate it is and how prison *is* an exaggerated version of high school. It's honestly shocking how institutional discipline resonates across sectors.
