More details on the health recovery factor for Ratio 4s (it does not help them):.

Quick followup on R4 disadvantage. Obviously, any damage the R1s do must also factor in health recovery for the R4. But even in the best case the R4 starts behind & falls further behind with time. I will prob make a video later about all of this, but for now here's the math: 1/4.

And that's if the R4 wins instantly (impossible). The longer rounds go, the worse it gets for R4s. Ultimately, a team of 3 has built-in time/health advantages to play with. R4s have to work VERY hard VERY quickly to try to match with their power adv. Tough in top level play! 4/4.

Here, R1 Yama has 9100 effective HP vs. R4 attack power. For a the weaker R1 to do the job vs R4's big health bar it needs to remove 5700 HP (22.5%) *after* HP recovery. 5700 target (shown in pic) + 3000 potential recovery = 8700 total.R4 8700 potential < R1 9100 actual. Oof. 3/

Simple version of health recovery: You get back as HP 3x what was left on the timer at the end of the previous round. Essentially, a round starts with 3000 health available for a win and that goes down linearly with time. This is a flat number that does not scale with ratios. 2/.

No! (Also, Fuck Morrigan) But hopefully this all helps you understand that the CvS2 ratio system is balanced enough for learning/casual play. You don't need three characters to start! But if you pick one you will be forced to learn how to pace yourself, a critical skill in CvS2.

And it fell just short! Congrats to Justin on his ~content~ and to Bas for thankfully winning CEO and not setting back CvS2 tournament meta 20 years (*nervous laughter*). I hope you enjoyed this terribly deep dive into CvS2! We'll see you at Evo 2025 for more CvS2 action! 13/.

Justin understands the math of the CvS2 free ratio system! He's also uniquely qualified to make an R4 character work, given his prowess with footsies and fundamentals. K-Groove Ratio 4 Haohmaru is the meme, but C-Groove Ratio 4 Sagat was the best shot at doing what he did. 12/.

Understanding all of this, you can see why Justin was still patient and selective in many of his last matches at CEO, even in the games where he wiped out Bas's R1 Yama. The R4 advantage is not that good of one, actually, especially against elite level competition. 11/.

Also, in Time Over games the winner is the character with the highest % of health regardless of ratio. R4s recover less health with long rounds and may need to be more aggro to keep their advantage, which can lead to mistakes & losing more/keeping less health than budgeted. 10/.

While the Ratio 4 character can kill an R1 pretty easily, they have to be careful not to take too much damage along the way. If they do, the R2 anchor character in the last round will often be ahead (at least according to the math) neutering the R4's advantage (over the R2). 9/.

The Ratio 1 character, despite having less HP & damage output than the Ratio 4, *is actually at an advantage* in the grand scheme of things due to the fact that, as team of 3, they have multiple chances and MUCH more total health to deny the R4 their attack power advantage. 8/.

Consider the first image above, showing the daunting difference between an R4 & R1. But that only shows what the R1 has to do to OCV the R4. (Which Bas did in a game!) When you rescale it to show what an R1 has to do break even for the team as a whole, things look different! 7/

Notice this isn't 25%! This is the first clue why Ratio 4 characters are generally not optimal for high-level CvS2 tournament play. It turns out that R4 characters are at a disadvantage due to their their high damage output not being enough to overcome their low total health. 6/.

R2 Blanka has 14800 raw HP, the equivalent of 11385 HP vs. an R4 if both had the same attack power. An R4 Sagat has 20720 HP. If equal at 11385 HP, he would have 55% health. This means the two R1s would collectively need to take off 45% health from R4 Sagat, or 22.5% each. 5/.

Here is how I will define this: If the final round starts with the R2's effective health (actual health ÷ R4 attack power pct.) equal to or more than the R4's actual health after going through two R1 characters, the R1s in the team were effective against the R4. 4/.

You can see how cautious an R1 needs to be against an R4. One wrong step can & will delete them with very little damage done against the R4. But how much damage do two R1s need to do to be effective in this scenario, particularly w/an R2 (for Bas, Blanka) anchoring the team? 3/.

Here is how character effectiveness in CvS2 changes per ratio:. R1: -20% health/-18% damage.R2: Base health/damage.R3: +17% health/damage.R4: +40% health/+30% damage. In R4 vs. R1 rounds, normalizing health & attack power equates to the health bars in the pic above. Daunting! 2/.
