Now use that need, those emotions, and put them back into your story and your characters. Because your characters are still a large part of you!. Writing is an art form, and sometimes the burn out is real. But the best way to over come that burn out?.

Feeling stuck in your writing?. Sometimes, in order to get to the end, you need to go back to the beginning. YOUR beginning. Why did you start writing?. What about this story spoke to you?. Remember why you needed to write…and frankly, why this industry still needs you…

So, it's a great sign when the agent is thinking ahead and asking you questions about what kind of writing career you want. That indicates a real partner, not someone who's going to drop you if book one doesn't sell! /🧵.

6. Lastly, talking about your long-term career, not just your individual project. Of course, this partly depends on what you're hoping for out of the relationship - if you just want an agent for the one book, that's fine. But most authors are seeking something longer-term.

5. A clear vision/plan for the book. This can be editorial (we have to cut x number of words) and strategic (we should pitch it as x). It can even be a curated list of editors they would like to approach. Green flags all around.

4. A well-established agency with senior support - this is especially a green flag for early-career agents. If they're at a respected agency with senior staff who make good deals, they probably have the support necessary to make good deals too.

3. Referrals to current or former clients. This is another huge green flag as it show this agent has nothing to hide - they've done right by their authors. Of course, you should always follow up with those authors, but even the agent passing on their details is a good sign.

An agreement that meets industry standards is a great sign that your new agency is author-friendly - big green flag.

2. Standard agency agreement. 15% is the standard commission for domestic sales. This can be higher for international rights. If you're at all worried, get the agreement checked by Authors' Guild (US) or Society of Authors (UK) and they'll flag anything worrying.

Check Publishers Marketplace, Bookbrunch, Publisher's Weekly, and the Bookseller (UK) to see what sales have been announced. And if they're towards the beginning of their career, remember it's OK if they don't have any - yet!.

1. Announced sales. With the caveat that sales can take AGES to be announced, sales are great indication that the agent has the contacts and know-how to make your book a success, particularly if they're in a similar area of the market.

RT @JamesSchannep: I don't know who needs to hear this today, but your fellow writers are your community, not your competition.
