When your heading into a big tournament & your pitchers say I will throw whenever the team needs me to throw to help us win, & your position players say I’ll play anywhere. I’ll hit anywhere in the order. I just want to win. That’s when you have something!
When I was in high school it would never cross my mind to talk back to an adult. Not ever. If a teacher, coach, administrator, bus driver, janitor, said something to me even if it was criticism my response would be simply Yes Sir, or Yes mam.
I’m sure this will catch some negative responses. I personally in 18 years as a coach mostly coaching 17-18 year olds have never gotten mad bc a parent dropped off a Gatorade/Water/protein bar to the dugout. Who cares.
Call me old fashioned. I like it when people work hard, don’t need a pat on the back, are respectful, care about the group more than themselves, don’t put out their negative thoughts for everyone to hear, & genuinely love what they do & everyone can see it.
High level athletes
Don’t have D’s & F’s on report card
Don’t miss offseason workouts
Don’t finish last in conditioning drills
Don’t fake injuries to miss workouts
Don’t run from competition
Don’t cry about being coached hard
Don’t have to be motivated
When your overall record looks something like this in HS 17-3 but you are beating most opponents by 10+ runs I have a news flash for you. Your kids aren’t getting better. Schedule harder opponents. If your 10-10 so what. Your players are improving.
When you get to college your coaches don’t care what you were ranked in HS, where you hit in order or how many games you won on mound before you got there. You know who cares less than them? Your teammates! Let your play do the talking & stay quiet.
Things I’ll never take for granted again. Church, baseball practice & games, watching college & pro baseball, watching March madness w/friends, going to gym, traveling, being in the office w/ coworkers, going to a restaurant, my kids in school.
#perspective
“Travel” Coaches out there that say I will not talk to parents/players about playing time. News flash. You are not Nick Saban. This is not even High School sports. The family PAID your organization money to play. You do owe them a conversation.
If you are on a travel teams “National” team & every player is from 1 state maybe you should rethink that name? 10 years ago we did National/American teams. Now every org in country uses the name. I’m changing our name this summer to Canes Prestige World Wide
Imagine managing a roster w/ 11.7 scholarships for 27 players. You don’t know who is going show up or leave bc of the draft. Your current best players may transfer. You feel you need to “commit” 14 year olds in case they pan out. This is College Baseball.
Prayer warriors out there please pray for my friend & colleague
@johnmwhittle
He is fighting in the hospital with COVID. John would do anything for anyone. A genuine loyal friend. It’s hard to find people out there better than John! Pull through buddy.
I didn’t play in the twitter/instagram era but I know my dad would not have let me post my own home runs & good plays on either. Not a chance! He would have said go play the game hard & people will do the tweeting & instagramming for you!
Chatting w/ a dad yesterday telling them we have 7 guys that play OF on our roster this summer. He says well looks like my son is going to have to compete. He knows nothing is guaranteed. Refreshing conversation. Wonder if his son will be successful in life?
Generally when players are good in the weight room they are good on the field. When the effort is lousy in the gym that will show you what the effort will be on the field. If you can’t give max effort in the weight room how can you be trusted on game day?
I don’t mind talking to a parent about their sons playing time or role on a team at all. I’m actually very comfortable doing so. Just know that I’m going to be honest. How the parent receives it is on that parent. My depth chart looks different than yours.
Players remember that you need the game of baseball! Baseball doesn’t need you. When your making your choices choose wisely. Do I drink that beer? Do I smoke that joint? Missing curfew. Probably not worth it. I promise the game will go on without you.
Lots of kids play travel baseball to get the scholarship. If you want college coaches to see your kid & he is unknown A. Go to their camp. B. Play for an organization that coaches/scouts value their opinion. Those are few & far between. Do your homework.
I see coaches getting upset that players leave their org. We are top 10 every year. I catered to a P all summer. Spot started him every outing. He is pitching for another team in Jupiter. Don’t take it personal. Some have no loyalty no matter how much you do.
A big reason why their are so many youth travel teams is bc when a dad realizes his son isn’t good enough he goes & starts another team. The youth parent especially wants the coach to play the best 8 & their kid. Kid loses lesson of winning the job.
Running your mouth never a good look. Others want you to fail. When your winning it deminishes it. When your losing others celebrate it. Be nice to people. Befriend, & Love others. Don’t take cheap shots, talk trash, kick people when down. Be a good example!
It’s kinda funny that fall baseball is literally when you win your job at the college level, & when pro baseball gets the most exciting & competitive. Meanwhile here in amateur world kids are being encouraged not to play. Makes sense? Maybe to others. Not me.
Having haters means you’re doing something. It’s a compliment. Don’t want haters then be mediocre & let them get to you & quit. But then you wouldn’t help all the people you impact despite what the haters say. So keep going. Ignore the noise!
When parents call amateur coaches asking for guarantees such as my son must play SS. Hit middle of order. No splitting time with anyone. What dream world are you trying to facilitate for your son? Do you think that prepares them for the next level? Or life?
Latest report: The amount of oxygen required is decreasing and inflammation is going down. Breathing is better. Things moving in the right direction!
@johnmwhittle
John appreciates all the thoughts & prayers. The support has been overwhelming. Keep praying.
That moment when a player asks you to call Virginia Tech for them & you tell them they are not good enough to play there. Then they ask for you to call UNC-Pembroke & you say you aren’t good enough to play there either. There is nothing wrong w/ D3. Go play!
It’s Jupiter week. For those of us in travel baseball it is the end of the road for seniors. Normally the last travel ball event they play in.
What once was an event that the Top 100 players in the country flocked too for various reasons some are being encouraged not to attend.…
Don’t be so quick to judge. You truly don’t know everyone’s circumstances & what they may be going thru. Being nice to people may be the single most important thing you can ever do while on this earth.
When your in a tournament & you have have a team meeting in the dugout after the game while the other team is waiting to get into the dugout you have no awareness, respect, consideration for others or Feel!
Coaches can win as many games as you want to. Players can play until high school, maybe get lucky & play in college, or maybe you are beyond blessed & you get a shot to play professionally. In the end relationships & how you treat people will hold more weight
These kids that are “tired” & skipping events have a rude awakening next year. Some getting bad info from advisors. Max Clark chased games last year & played football. Kevin McGonigle & Jonny Farmelo played full summer & fall schedules chased at bats!
If college coaches & pro scouts can’t come on road this summer we will soon find out who the baseball players are if we can safely play somewhere of course! You don’t play baseball to be “seen”! You play Bc you love the game!
One of the most prominent HS coaches in NC who runs one of the top programs year in & year out. After adding up hours on field this year he made less than a dollar an hour. Every playoff game he wins that amount goes down bc he doesn’t get paid for playoffs.
Competition is very healthy especially when you don’t fear it. Someone on your heels is fun. What’s even more fun is when someone thinks they are on your heels & they aren’t close. Now that’s fun. Embrace that. Great time to turn it up a notch & bury them.
There is a big difference b/w committing to a college & actually being ready to get on the field when you arrive. Go to class, get in weight room, keep your nose clean! Hit! Take care of your arm! Get as many in game reps as you can! It isn’t easy!
Saw this the other day. This is simply true whether you like it or not.
They don't respect you at the bottom, they ignore you in the middle, and they hate you at the top. You'll never have everyone's approval.
Had 6 MLB pitchers on a panel the other night. None of which threw breaking balls until 13 years old. Moral of story. Kids snapping off breakers to win 11 year old games it’s not worth it! Plenty of time to develop that pitch when you physically mature!
Todays recruiting for a amateur player. 8th graders committing to schools & never stepping foot on campus or shaking the head coaches hand. Seniors that are good enough begging to find a home, & everything in between. It’s an interesting space to be in!
In 2005 we handed uniforms out of my truck that we paid for by running 3 car washes. Humble beginnings. The one thing that stands out today above it all is the countless genuine friendships gained. You can’t put a price tag on that. Invaluable!
I see a lot of posts talking about recruiting that insinuate organizations promise players to be recruited or that you have to play travel baseball to be recruited. Being that I have owned a travel organization for 18 years I will assure you that you don’t need to play travel…
Want to lose? Cater to a bunch of guys that have to know when they are throwing. See radar guns all mechanics go out window & throw as hard as they can. Hey coach I hit 96 mph. Cool runners are on 1st & 2nd nobody out. Bunt situation. But I hit Velo coach. 👎
I reach out to college coach to tell him about a player that I feel is a good fit for them. No response. 4 months later he texts me about another kid. Of course I respond. They have streets signs for this it’s called One Way!
Very simple theory. If you have to say you are. Then most likely you ain’t! If others are saying you are then it’s almost always more valid. Keep your self praising quiet. If you really are others will do the talking, tweeting & instagramming for you.
Nothing screams unprofessionalism more than coaching a team & allowing your players to talk trash, curse at the top of their lungs, & basically do whatever they want. Regardless of sport you should not be coaching our youth. No place for you if you can’t lead
Number 1 thing you can do as a coach to win your players over is show them you care at all times. They will follow that over your knowledge every time. If they sense you don’t care you will lose them every time.
Decommitting isn’t good! I don’t have a solution. I could say in order to play for the canes you must sign a paper that says if you decommit from your college your off the team. Not sure it would help. Colleges drop guys all the time. Hate it from both sides.
9 times out of 10 when I hear or see about a kid transferring from one college to another I could have told you it was going to happen when they were 16.
Year 3 in this high school gig. It amazes me that some coaches when you reach out to schedule games they don’t respond at all. Good programs too. Just don’t respond. Anything would be good. We are full. I don’t want to play you. Really anything would be good
If you are doing lessons w/ a player & your 10 lessons in & the player isn’t getting any better at all, or you know the kid can’t play just maybe have a conversation w/ the kid & family instead of continue to take the cash over & over again? Right thing to do
Excited to announce our partnership w/ The New York Mets
@Mets
moving forward for our
@TheCanesBB
17U team to be Canes National NY Mets Scout Team. Thanks
@tanous_tom
@bhayes162
& the Mets Scouting Dept trusting us with their brand! This is going to be fun!
I am beyond grateful that my parents didn’t point blame at others for our failures growing up. We didn’t talk about other people’s shortcomings to make ourselves feel better growing up either. Thank you Mom & Dad. As a coach it’s amazing what I see & hear.
I saw a few 8th graders & freshman struggle this week at times grasping our workouts. Upperclassmen on the team helped them w/out being told to do so. They didn’t mock them. They helped & encouraged them. That is when you know you have good kids.
@EaglesFCS
If you’re a travel coach you are not a College or Pro Coach. You will not get fired if you lose games. People are paying you for a service. You are in the Service industry. How you treat your clients (Players/Parents) will play a role in your programs success
I’m speechless that I just saw that happen in the big leagues in game 7 of the NLCS. Don’t even know what to say. 2nd & 3rd no one out & you go on contact??!!! Speechless
If you see a decrease of college coaches recruiting the summer circuit realize that with the transfer portal now they can go get the kid that is ready right away scouting college summer leagues rather than committing a kid they won’t see for 3 years.
I often wonder w/ helicopter parents that try to control every single thing that happens w/ their kids why they think they know the way better than those who do it everyday. You don’t have a seat at the table. Pull up a seat & watch. Best advice I can give.
I’ve never cared too much what PG or PBR says a kids ranking is. If a player comes in & out performs another player we play that player. It’s one thing to tell your players your going to reward good play, & selfless play. It’s another to actually do it.
Spoke to 10+ Division 1 programs this week about a few 2021 grads. All have scholarships available. Will be out in the spring, & summer to evaluate. Focus on getting better everyday. Real important to not compare your recruiting process to others.
I saw in a recent story that Matt Carpenter when signed by the Yankees told them that he doesn’t care when he plays, where he plays and in fact he would load the bags on the plane if they asked them to. You get a team full of those guys. You win!
It’s very easy to be by someone’s side when things are riding high. When someone is by your side & shows genuine interest in you when you are at your lowest those are the people you fight to keep in your life til the end.
If you want your players to perform create a space where everyone feels like it’s ok to fail. Ironically everyone will fail less when you do this. The fear model is old & lame! Each year the fear model work less & less with the generation coming up.
I see the D1 or bust replies. Couldn’t be further from the truth. We encourage the right fit. D1, D2, D3, NAIA, JUCO, & even post grad. All levels have good baseball. It’s ok to play in HS simply bc it’s fun. Be a part of a team. Work hard. Enjoy your journey
I see a lot of coaches “usually young” trying to be liked. Be their buddy over taking the respect route. I assure you your players will play harder, & ultimately follow your lead more if they respect you over like you. By the way you can be liked & respected!
Atlanta bound for
@PerfectGameUSA
WWBA for the 15th year in a row. What a wild 15 years. So many cool stories, & unforgettable moments. Wouldn’t trade them for anything. The players we have gotten to Coach & Coach against it’s been remarkable.
@PG_Tourney
Extremely proud to be a part of this team we had this summer. We lost 1 game all summer and did in the last game. Summer of 2021 is one I will never forget
@TheCanesBB
When kids face adversity the ones that fight through it almost always end up better off than the ones that run from it. In college this is transferring. Our level it’s team jumping. Most of the time you can look in mirror & fix your problems. Compete!
Rent is due everyday! You may seem like your accomplished or you have arrived but that will be the moment it can all be taken away. Satisfaction is a dangerous thing when your sitting in a spot that many are inching towards every second. Rent is due everyday!
I’m a prep arm I didn’t throw 1 inn this spring. I threw 15 innings competitively this summer, & I have an opportunity to throw this fall (SAFELY) last thing I am doing is shutting down. We are huge on protecting arms but since when did pitchers not pitch?
You can do the work & still not get the reward. Yes just bc you put the work in doesn’t mean your going to get there. Other side of the coin is if you don’t put the work in you have ZERO chance.
Committing is just a bad word in recruiting. The blueprint should read. College will drop you if you go backwards as a player or if they over commit guys. Players will drop college if they think they can do better or don’t feel just right at all times.
Our players often do come from all over the country. Ask them if they feel like they are on a team. Ask them if they are prepared. Ask them if they care about their teammates. You may be surprised what you hear. You can have guys from all over & have a “Team”
Tweeting about working hard is something anyone can do. Work in silence. Consistent results are much louder than tweets. If you go out & perform “consistently” you won’t have to tweet or say anything! Everyone will know!
Fell one game short here in Jupiter. Our players fought their tails off down here. Congrats to
@5starnational
on the title. I will never forget this class of 2023
@TheCanesBB
Bunch of selfless fighters. ✊
The ability to be able to self evaluate & take constructive criticism from others not get offended but use it to your advantage & ultimately get better may be the single most important trait you need to be successful. Without it you will always climb uphill
Congrats to our guys on a hard fought championship vs some of the top teams in the country. A true team win where everyone contributed. 15-0 start to the summer. Very proud of these guys.
@TheCanesBB
Winning is one of the best feelings on earth BUT as coaches your calling is to not only hold your players accountable at all times to do things the right way but also model it. People will forget the wins. They won’t forget how you treated them good or bad.
It’s so refreshing when you are around people that want excellence in all that you do. When you have a bunch of people on the same bus that are like minded it’s endless what you can accomplish.
One thing I hate is saying bye to seniors. It’s a difficult thing. When you genuinely care about your players it’s tough to know you won’t get to coach them anymore. Enjoy every second of it while you got it. Relationships over championships.
We have 15 different people that work with us that have been with us for 10+ years. Players rarely leave. It’s called continuity. Continuity can go a long ways in any organization or team. Caring about what you’re doing & the people around you always wins.
If you don’t like your situation & you automatically point to the coach or others as being the reason why your there that will be your biggest obstacle to overcome. Go to the mirror & take a long look in it. Start there. Then you have a shot to correct it.
We are starting a new organization called Global Elite Prime Scout Team. We are going to buy airplanes & scout the entire world! Solid mixture of 8 countries representing our team in Jupiter this fall.
The % of players out there that are going to make baseball a career is low! The game is a great teacher. Teaches you how to work hard for something, deal w/ failure, be a part of a team. Stop stressing. Enjoy the ride. The ride doesn’t last forever.
Proud of our guys. Proud of how we conduct ourselves when we have success, and how we conduct ourselves when we have failure. I’ll take our players & the way they carry themselves everyday. Proud of all of them.
I didn’t know Coach Altobelli, & I didn’t know Kobe! This has really had an effect on me. I told our team today that we lost two icons amongst others. It’s a tragedy! Be a positive influence on one another. Lift one another up! Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed!
So much talent in this picture! 2022 grads will always have a special place for me! Winners in life in this photo! Life long relationships all over the place. That is why I started
@TheCanesBB
in 2005. Winning is cool. Bonds & real friendship is cooler.
It’s opening day in college baseball!!! Couldn’t be happier for all the Coaches, Players, Parents, & Fans! I bet a lot of guys play just a little bit harder this year. The past year has taught so many of us that you shouldn’t take anything for granted!
The ones that do it don’t have to say they are going to do it, or talk about it after they have done it. They are quietly preparing to do it again. Talk = nothing.
I hear comments from college coaches about how amateur kids don’t know how to win. They can throw harder, & hit it further than ever before but don’t know how to win. They must not be recruiting
@TheCanesBB
Nat/American players. 19 Natl Championships since 09
When your 15-18 years old if you’re 30 year old self could get in your ear your priorities would change. Unfortunately not an option. Next best thing lean on the ones that love you the most that have your best interest. The older the better.
What I have learned over the years in this travel ball racket. Respect all your opponents. Know everyone is a threat. Teach your kids that winning does matter! Competing matters, & if I was betting I would always bet on us. Believe in us over all.
Proud of our team this week! After all of us losing our high school seasons this was a special way to start the summer with an awesome group of kids!
@thecanesbb
2020 PBR Classic Champions!
I personally don’t think their is anything wrong with playing on a travel team & know that you don’t want to play in college, or end up deciding not to play in college. Maybe you just love the game? Enjoy being on a team? Enjoy competing?
One of the biggest advantages of playing for the teams I have had the past 10 years is our hitters get to see every teams
#1
arm. That is a such an advantage for our hitters development. Highly competitive ABs where the other team will do anything to win.
