🚌 🚎 🚂 🚲 🛴 Modality is a tool for visualising - in one place - all the mobility solutions of an area, analysing their impact and allowing new scenarios to be tested. It is both a #dataviz and simulation tool. More on 👉 https://t.co/VZfLrO4njD

Conclusion: To promote modal shift (🚗 → 🚎), we need to boost alternative transport options AND revisit our spatial planning & residential habits. The dream of a detached house with a large garden 🏡 contradicts the aim of cutting transport emissions🤷

Result? In the Grenoble region, public transport covers both residential areas & economic activity zones: TOD is imposed via geographical constraints. In contrast, in Nantes, urban sprawl makes it much more challenging to follow a planning logic centred on car alternatives.

And, the population is much more densely distributed around Grenoble, even though there are fewer inhabitants. Hardly surprising when you consider the topography: 🏔️ Grenoble is nestled between mountain ranges, whereas 🌊 Nantes sprawls out at the mouth of the Loire estuary.

How can we explain this? The suburbs of Nantes have less than 1 station per km2 of populated area whereas Grenoble has more than 2. This results from a more extensive transit system: with twice as many stations in the suburbs of Grenoble compared to Nantes, for the same area.

Excluding the first 10km from the centre, it's striking: 1/2 of Nantes'suburban residents lack nearby public transport & face a 20-min avg walk to a stop. In contrast, only 18% of suburban Grenoble residents have no transport option with a shorter avg walk of 7 min to a station

Within a 35km radius of Nantes, about 30% of the inhabitants have no access to public transportation within a 10-minute walk. In the same region around Grenoble, it's just 10% of residents.

Transit Oriented Development (#TOD) aims to centralize jobs, housing, and amenities around public transport hubs to reduce car reliance and promote alternative transportation. Consider the example of 2 major French cities and their suburban regions: #Nantes and #Grenoble. 👇

🏘️ Why is urban sprawl a problem when it comes to reducing the environmental impact of our commuting? There are 3x more residents in off-the-grid areas on the outskirts of Nantes than those of Grenoble: a real-world case of #TOD visualized using Modality 👇
