The narrative RISKS taken by keeping the actual story a secret behind misleading promotional material are giving me PTSD flashbacks to Double Rainboom. Having only seen the Flower introduction video, and the "Flower builds a pony" promo, the actual direction this goes is crazy

It is, however, true that they probably share the same sort of cultural origin point, and I'm sure if you got a Venn diagram of who says what, you'll probably encounter a decent amount of overlap. But there is an important semantic distinction.

It's also complicated by the fact that referring to female ponies as mares is entirely normal in most use-cases. Read any fanfiction, and female ponies will be called mares, and there'll be no other ascribed meaning. The same is not true for capital "F" Females
