I started a development studio from scratch.
No clients, No network, No previous work to share.
Now, 6 months in, the portfolio is full of work I'm proud of.
Here's an ever growing list of projects
@StudioOutkast
has built:
Recently, I've been spending my afternoons designing landing pages for different industries.
I'm sharing these to inspire. Use as you wish.
Like + comment "design" and I'll send you the Figma link.
(Must be following)
Stop using poor-quality mockups to display your work.
It's hurting your business.
Here are 5 websites I use to find beautiful mockups (and why they're so good):
Hey Designers!
I have something special for you.
Introducing , an ecommerce inspiration tool that lets you dive deep with advanced filtering options.
We'll be updating it every Friday with new stores.
A little more on why we built it:
(Before we jump
Intro animation exploration for a project I'm currently building.
First time using the
@gsap
FLIP plugin. Definitely has some powerful use cases I'd like to explore.
Hey Designers!
I built something for you.
But before we go live, I've got an ask:
I'm looking for 10 - 15 people (preferably designers) to test and give feedback on a new inspiration tool.
Shoot me a DM/Comment if interested.
(P.S When we get 40m views, I'll remember you)
Open Graph Image Design is Important.
It'll help spark interest when sharing your site on social media.
Here's the best inspiration site I've found to help you level up.

(Thank you
@Mike_Andreuzza
for sharing)
Found an easy(ish) way to animate route changes in Next.JS and GSAP during a new project I'm building.
Will do a write up once this is live because there is barely any examples out there using this tech stack.
Stay tuned (and smooth)...
Perception is everything.
The way you present your work matters just as much as the work itself.
It's the reason I choose to spend extra hours on my studio website and invest in high quality mockups.
Remember, purchase decisions are based on perceived value.

Q4 2023 was busy..
I'm now booking projects for 2024 in:
• Creative development.
• Full-stack web development.
• Interaction design and development.
• Ecommerce development (headless + native shopify)
Shoot me a DM or Contact me via

Have you used
@remix_run
?
It's crazy good.
I've removed most (if not all) complex state management code just by using it.
Highly recommend giving it a shot.
I have some exciting news..
The new
@StudioOutkast
site is now live 🎉
Big thanks to
@_kprkr
for acing the creative direction and overall design.
Post coming tomorrow on why we needed a new visual identity.

Felt good to updating the studio site with new work and copy after clearing up the direction.
Although this is not it's final form.
(Something coming in 2024...)
Time for a breakdown:
We've had a lot of positive feedback on the intro experience for MONOLIF so I wanted to explain how we got to that concept.
Firstly, why do I use intro animations?
Unless you're loading a heavy resource like a 3D experience or a large video file, the
I love working with designers I admire.
It makes my development work look/feel so much better.
@_kprkr
killed the design on this one and it's only an MVP 👀
Grateful.
Time to clear things up:
@sanity_io
is my go-to tool for managing websites and content.
Wanted to share some thoughts on why I use Sanity over other CMSs and website builder tools.
Going to start off with this:
No-code tools are great and they serve a purpose. 100%. No
Crediting designers/developers is the highest requested feature for
@STRFRNTDESIGN
Here's my idea:
• Remove launch button from bottom right of card.
• Add arrow on hover to indicate you're leaving the site.
• Add animated credit section with links.
What do you think?
Why do some apps feel like love at first sight?
90% of the time it's because the team has wowed me with their onboarding experience.
First impressions are everything.
(WIP onboarding experience for a product I'm building 👀 )
I have some exciting news..
Over the past 3 months
@_kprkr
and I have been building a self journalling tool called Solomon. It helps you give better advice to yourself.
It's live and ready to be used: 🎉🎉
P.S. This is just the MVP. More to come soon.
Most product lookbooks suck.
This is concerning because over 85% of consumers prefer visual information over text.
Meaning they'd rather see your product in context than read a text block about it.
(Progress update on our interactive lookbook)
Freelancers need to be more like doctors
A doctor doesn't ask their patient:
"What surgery would you like today, Sir?"
They tell them what surgery they need to solve THEIR problem
The same approach applies when working with clients
You are the expert.
Act like it.
I'm committing to a 30-day build challenge.
I'm building an inspiration tool for designers, developers, and retailers.
It'll focus purely on digital storefronts.
Rules:
1. Minimum of 30 minutes a day building.
2. Update this thread each day with progress.
Enjoy the process:
Time for an update:
Over the past 3 months, I've struggled with the direction to take my development studio
@StudioOutkast
.
I started out by niching down into ecommerce.
I quickly realized ecommerce is interesting, but it's not the ONLY work I want to be doing.
So I was left
My new studio website just dropped:
I know what you're thinking:
Another new website? Why?
In this post, I want to explain the thinking behind the new
@StudioOutkast
visual identity.
Let's jump back 5 months to when Outkast started.
Our initial focus
Skills I've acquired that have paid off big:
• Web development.
• Web3 Integration.
• UI design.
Skills I'm acquiring that are going to pay off even better:
• Writing.
• Psychology.
• Audience building.
Stack skills or become a commodity.
Your choice.
I struggled with the interaction design for Solomon.
I'm so used to building sleek and engaging interactions that impress users.
But being a journaling tool, the interactions needed to be soft and calming.
Stoked with result.
Can't wait to share with you.
Be ambitious with your future.
- Set deadlines that scare you.
- Set targets that are unrealistic.
- Set goals that seem unachievable.
You'll be surprised by what you can achieve.
The dopest piece of art I've received/collected to date.
Very thankful to my friend
@0xPavlo
@bongdoe
incredible work man.
I need to build a site in this theme soon 👀
Designers & Developers!
I'm releasing a feature update for that gives credit to the teams who designed and built the incredible stores we've featured.
If your site is featured or you know the team that built a site that is featured, please shoot me a
I could have done better.
Recently completed a web development project where there were a few setbacks.
This came down to a deficiency in project management from my end.
This created a huge opportunity for improvement.
Here's what happened:
The client had a lot of change
How I got a job as a developer without going to university:
- Prioritized self-education.
- Signed up to
@FrontendMasters
.
- Studied in-demand skills (React).
- Built a bunch of portfolio projects.
- Applied and interviewed for 1 role.
This took 6 months
A degree takes 3 years
Lots of new friends on Twitter lately so
I'd like to introduce myself:
Hey! I'm Will, a web designer & developer currently based in Bali.
I write about design/dev, productivity, and online business.
Appreciate all the support!
Let's build.
If you purchased a
@dysto_inc
token just for
@ProjectYinYang
WL, I advise you to spend some time in the discord before making your decision to sell.
You have access to some of the greatest minds in the space. Undervalued is an understatement.
The team at
@Magma_nft
already over delivering. WL for top tier projects, educational VC around NFTs and constant calls that have paid back the mint price all in the past week. 🌋🌋
I’ve received 25+ new inbound leads and booked 6 calls since the launch of the new MONOLIF site - all thanks to the instant quote calculator.
Here are the thoughts that led us to include this crucial tool...
A Typically Taboo Topic.
For some reason, money (and pricing) can
Lead generation strategy for my development studio:
1. Collaborate with designers on their studio sites.
2. Knock it out of the park.
3. Become their go to development partner for future clients.
4. Repeat.
It's both enjoyable, and gets results.
Win Win.
Little weekend build for my best friend
@erinfleming__
.
Pretty dope being able to use your skills to help those around you.
Check below for my build stats (I'm faster than I thought):
I've pivoted slightly.
My studio (
@StudioOutkast
) has shifted its focus from design + dev to dev only.
Why? We'd rather excel in one area than be average in two.
Oh and while I've got you,
We're looking for partner design studios (or designers).
DM for details.
Why am I ditching freelancing for the entrepreneurial route?
Because I was sick of not building any leverage and came across
@theChrisDo
.
I then proceeded down the deepest
@thefuturishere
rabbit hole for a binge-worthy master class on business.
Best decision I've ever made.
I've been a little quiet on here lately.
My reason:
"If you have nothing to talk about, do something worth talking about"
A couple of projects are in the works.
One project is personal. Can't wait to share with you.
Exciting times ahead.
Talk soon.
1. Studio Family.
Hands down one the best on this list.
Multiple different devices in different settings.
I love the dark approach to a lot of their product photography.
The "Tech Mockup Collection" is a great deal.

13 months ago I quit my job.
Today I'm able to:
- Set my own hours.
- Say NO to projects I don't want.
- Live/work anywhere in the world.
Here are the 5 steps standing between you and doing it too:
What does your refinement process look like?
I get out as many ideas as possible, even if they're terrible.
From there I choose what I like and expand further.
(Here's an example of a recent case study)
The argument that "fancy" websites don't work is stupid.
Not all sites have the same goal.
If you're site is designed purely to convert leads or sell products then sure, animate with care.
But if you want build an emotional connection between brand and user, make it FANCY.
We're in the era of modern software companies as lifestyle brands.
We've passed the basic utility phase; now, it's about delivering an experience and forging an identity that resonates with the aspirations and values of your audience.
UX has become a fashion statement, and
6 months of living in Bali ends tomorrow.
It's been a fantastic time but I'll be honest:
I'm ready for winter.
Canada here I come (after a stop home in New Zealand).
Caching turns god-mode on for your website.
Look at the speed of
@Tinloof
's website.
You type, hit enter, site appears.
No loading spinners. No waiting.
Optimisation is why I choose code over no-code.
P.S They have epic developer resources on their site.
Last week we launched the
@MonolifStudio
quote calculator.
Since then, MONOLIF has received 89 new form submissions and booked 8 calls.
Wanted to share some thoughts on how this is working and why it's a become a crucial tool for MONOLIF's business:
Let's start with the
Side projects cure boredom.
I've noticed a pattern.
When I'm NOT building a side project:
• Motivation is at an all-time low.
• My day-to-day work feels boring.
• I feel more addicted to social media.
When I am building I feel great.
My advice:
Start a project.
