People whose primary vibe is "I and my tribe are domain-expertise-endowed professionals, the people I criticize and mock are amateurs, and you should shut up" are really really uncool, and people should recognize the pattern and immediately unfollow anyone who exhibits it.

Does this make happiness the ultimate good? No. But the argument here is that people make a big mistake when they discount happiness because it isn't the ultimate good. A good definition of happiness is very eudaimonic as well.

There is a definition of happiness that 1) makes sense, 2) escapes the hedonic adaptation problem, 3) isn't childlike or naive, and 4) is practical & deeply connected to things you care about. It is in this video.

The primary philosophical objections to happiness come down to bad definitions. Once you fix the definition, the "excellence only" people join too: https://t.co/C76xygdSDj

“I want you to come and see me.” “But I can see you!” she exclaimed. “What more do you want?” “I want to see you not through the machine,” said Kuno. “I want to speak to you not through the wearisome Machine.” E.M. Forster, “The Machine Stops” (1909)

That’s just one example. Seen this process repeat over and over again, and it always results in missed opportunities.

Always be curious. I had a friend in college who was a Bitcoin fanatic, and he was laughed at the whole way through. Pretty sure no one even read about it, and just dismissed it for its name.
