In one of my first rigs, I tried to make a bigger "eye" with a smaller "ball" and ended up making my main character a little too "bug-eyed" accidentally. So I recently reworked her, where giving her "bigger" eyes actually allowed them to be smaller, ironically.

This is how I do my eyeballs as well now! I prefer having a really huge "ball" both for a flatter, cartoonier shape, more realistic curve on the iris, and the ability to get really wide expressions if I want them.
Mario characters' cartoony eyes require their eye movements to be animated by sliding around the iris instead of rotating the eyeball. Despite this, some Switch games unnecessarily fully model their eyeballs, revealing they take up a startlingly large space inside their heads.
