I think it’s possible to have a democratic humanities that is middlebrow and enriching, and which fills the cultural niche recently occupied by something like prestige television (and which may be empty now). But a lot of humanistic work is necessarily and unavoidably elitist.
My most right wing opinion is that humanities were never supposed to be for the masses. What might be the reason we should have millions of classicists, creative writing experts, English Lit majors, and literary critics?.

It's true that too many humanities PhDs are being produced, but wealthy schools like Chicago are the ones that should be retaining their programs. There still needs to be a critical mass of trained scholars, and that's what those endowments were supposed to preserve.

Elite unis have been such awful stewards of their legacies. This is just pathetic.
Seven others, including classics, Middle Eastern studies, and Germanic studies, will accept no new students. These changes are not the result of committee recommendations and currently reflect a one-time decision, per the email. This is a developing story.

The situation looks so bad for the AFU on the ground that it’s hard to believe Putin would make any sort of deal right now, when he has good reason to believe his leverage will increase.
