Actually, the whole scene was improvised, it was just a regular party & the director found a camera. In fact, the whole movie was an accident. Coppola wanted everyone to pretend like they were in a movie & when they started talking, he left it in, creating a whole other movie.
Al Pacino improvised the kiss in The Godfather II. The script called for Michael to confront Fredo with dialogue alone, but Pacino unexpectedly kissed John Cazale on the mouth. Coppola left it in, turning it into one of the film’s most iconic moments.
