@wcp
are you gonna bait people to scream white privilege and appropriation? Cos thatโs gonna be weak af. Why not also tweet about businesses that use English word but none of them are one nor speak it?
@wcp
Shouldn't really be a big deal. Why are those Fil-Ams so territorial and possessive about the word? In no other country would this (non-Pinoys naming their resto/bar "barkada" ) be an issue..only in the US.
@wcp
What the f--k is the problem? Cultural appropriation? It's more like cultural appreciation to me. Shame on those who see it otherwise. To the owners, please don't change. Maybe just add some Filipino dishes to your menu. Check out our

@wcp
lmao the Filipinos are okay with other people using our words for their restaurants, whether or not they're Filipino cuisine. Y'know, it's like how people use French words to make things fancy.
THE HILARIOUS THING IS
BARKADA IS SUCH A CASUAL WORD
IT'S NOT FANCY AT ALL HAHAHA
@wcp
The four owners are Barkadas (magbabarkada) and barkadas loves to hang out at bars so the name is just appropriate even if nothing filipino is in there except the word Barkada
@wcp
Nat'l Ass. of Fil-Am Conservatives (NAFAC): โThe word Barkada is a Spanish word for BarcadaโFilipinos adapted to mean "group of friends hanging around instead of being productive" [Lexico]. Today, it means more than thatโWe appreciate the cultural appreciation of our language.
@wcp
So what if they used that name? Try visiting the Philippines. Youโd be surprised to see most uses foreign names or words in their business name. They should keep the name.
@wcp
Real pinoys should be proud, its the half-pinoys that were offended by the "appropriation". They lived in murica for so long, they have taken the causcasian habit of getting offended easily. I hope the caucasians treat them as equals too, for their sake.
@wcp
Iโm Filipino and I do not see anything wrong with using Barkada in their business name. I think it is flattering. The people who complained are effing nutjobs.
@wcp
I am absolutely fine with them using the common and beloved word that we have, โBarkadaโ. I donโt see anything wrong with that at all. However, it would be better if they add a Filipino drink to their product list to pay respect to our culture ๐
