Give yourself grace. Until you figure out how to go to work at 9am after having slept only for an hour the previous night because of a sleep regression, take time off as needed. You’ll be more useful to your team as a well rested person than a close-to-burnout individual. (7/7).

Tell your team what to expect. When I went back to work after my first baby, I realized a lot of people were “waiting for shar to come back” to make decisions. It was disappointing for them when I did go back because I didn’t have the capability to make decisions on day 1. (6/7).

Calendars give you a solid API to navigate the two worlds – work and life. Be transparent about your schedule. E.g. If you are breast pumping during the day, mark time on your calendar to do so, that way people know not to schedule over it. (5/7).

Have a ramp up plan, just like you would if you were to start at a new workplace. There is no switch you can flip to go from being a full time parent to someone who needs to balance work and life. Having a ramp up plan can give you a higher chance of succeeding. (3/7).

It helps to bear in mind that you’re not coming back to the job you left. Having a baby is a significant life event. You’ve changed as a person, your workplace probably has as well. Give yourself time to absorb and learn what’s different. (2/7).
