When Trump says an "artificial line" divides us and Canada, or that Canada would not exist without US subsidies, he is denying the national identity of a neighboring country. He is suggesting that annexing Canada is an economic inevitability. That is extraordinarily dangerous.

I know most of what Trump says is untrue. Like other modern autocrats, he knows that overwhelming us with information and false narratives breeds nihilism and nihilism allows him to consolidate power. But I am really angry at the way reporters are entertaining this question.

"Annexing Canada would change American politics" is a wild, wild understatement. Canada is a sovereign foreign power. Trump is not "trolling" he is making expansionist threats. How true they are is irrelevant. This is not a fucking game.
