I asked ⁦@wasimakramlive⁩ what he thought of this action. He zoomed in, looked carefully and said “looks quite good - I like it - he’s a promising cricketer - who is he?” I told him he’s my next mayor ⁦@ZohranKMamdani⁩ “Please convey to him he has a nice action”

Since Akshaye Khanna is the flavour of the time, one interesting information about him: he is the grandson of India's great #cricket commentator AFS Talyarkhan. His grandfather was the voice of cricket on All India Radio

As someone at JHS told me (while simultaneously agreeing that my points are very well argued!) - they actually haven’t made an announcement themselves. This is a sourced story.

20/ And yesterday - as I write this - JioStar announced it's pulling out of its $3 billion ICC media rights deal two years early. They explicitly cited the RMG ban as a factor: an "$840 million advertising hole." Sony, Amazon, Netflix have all declined to step in.

25/ Harsh told me the government clearly didn't want the fantasy industry to exist. He wouldn't fight the ban. Dream11 is pivoting to free-to-play, ad-supported models. Whether that works remains to be seen.

24/ The government conflated fundamentally different products - rate-limited fantasy sports with continuous, addictive poker and rummy - and banned everything. They destroyed a legitimate industry generating tax revenue and funding cricket development. Shortsighted IMHO.

23/ That's mechanism design - the same concept I wrote about with net neutrality. Get the incentives right, and capitalism can work for society.

22/ There's a broader principle here. When you create the right incentive structures, you can align private interests with public goods. Dream11 made money by making cricket engaging. In doing so, it funded global cricket and created a legal alternative to underground betting.

21/ We banned the legal option. The illegal option thrived. Tax revenues vanished. Jobs disappeared. Cricket economics cratered. This is what prohibition always does.

18/ Cricket economics have cratered. IPL ecosystem valuation: down for two consecutive years. •2023: ₹92,500 crore •2024: ₹82,700 crore •2025: ₹76,100 crore The RMG ban left a ₹1,500-2,000 crore annual hole in cricket advertising.

17/ The government has issued 1,500+ blocking orders against illegal gambling sites since 2022. The platforms just cycle through domain extensions and mirror sites. The demand didn't go away. It just went underground - to platforms with zero consumer protections.

16/ Months later, the effects are exactly what prohibition economics would predict. A @ABORCUTS survey found offshore betting usage rose from 68% to 82% after the ban. Nearly 25% of people who had NEVER used offshore sites started using them post-ban.
