If #starcontrol was 3D with flat shading and without textures or filtering, like in the early '90s. #Blender3D #RETROGAMING

A procedural #b3d damaged tile material shader that respects the tile boundaries (most of the time). Using a single noise texture for the damage #techart #gamedev

To add color variation on each tile. This does not work on Eevee, unfortunately. It could be done using geometry nodes, though.

There are not enough wedge shaped computers or cases these days so I designed this for a #raspberrypi 4 and a #TKL keyboard using #b3d. It is heavily inspired by the #HBF1XD #msx2 computer released in 1987.

Should you want to try this for yourself, enable real-time compositor effects in the 3D rendered viewport so you can see the effects instantly.

In the end I think getting a result that is indistinguishable from hand crafted pixels is not completely attainable, but you can get quite far.

The biggest challenge with the compositor approach was to maintain some sort of control of smaller details, which is not simple since the method by which this effect was achieved requires careful placement and sizing of the 3D objects.
