Key findings:.Protected areas (PA) in borderlands of Asian countries:.1. are larger near borders compared to those further away.2. are closer to PAs across the border.3. have lower levels of habitat loss .These factors could facilitate transboundary conservation opportunities.

This work, published in @FrontConservSci, was part of my Master's thesis at @UniofOxford a few years ago. Thanks to @KSSeshadri for covering it.

Key Takeaways:.1. New spatial approach to identify transboundary opportunities at large scale.2. Africa holds immense potential for new transboundary conservation areas.3. Findings can aid transboundary conservation for positive outcomes for nature & people across Africa 10/n.

These countries are good candidates for future transboundary initiatives given their shared ecosystems, species movement across borders, and history of successful cooperation .9/n.

Countrywise results show Zimbabwe-Zambia, Burkina Faso-Niger, Burkina Faso-Benin & Ethiopia-South Sudan have high numbers of potential TBCAs with large & touching protected areas (Fig B). 8/n

We found that Africa has at least 27 existing TBCAs and 8,481 combinations of potential TBCAs comprising 2,326 individual protected areas. Existing TBCA list is in the supplement . 7/n.

We analysed functional connectivity for mammals between protected areas in potential TBCAs using @brennan_angie & Robin Naidoo's layer on functional connectivity. See their amazing study here: 6/n.

In this study, we:.1. Assessed existing Transboundary conservation areas (TBCAs).2. Identified opportunities for potential TBCAs .3. Prioritised potential TBCAs based on ecological factors.5/n.
