Dedicated to preserving the hockey memory and legacy of Eganville's first professional hockey player Gord Byers. RIP to our original pro !
Joined August 2013
The greatest moment in Eganville sports history occurred this date in 1887. Eganville blacksmith Patsy Cardiff fought world champion boxer John L Sullivan to a 6 round draw at Washington Roller Rink in Minneapolis. Unfortunately, this is a fact little known to town residents now.

Fifty years ago, the biggest goal by an Eganville resident was scored. Although only here for a brief time, Guy Smith scored in a 9-6 NE Whalers victory over the Winnipeg Jets to win the Avco trophy, a fact still appreciated by his 60-61 Eganville Eagles teammates years later.

On this day in 1979, Bobby Orr finished his professional hockey career with one game with the North Stars, He scored a goal and assist in the game, and one can only imagine how good the North Stars would have been if he was able to continue.

The pride of Crooked Rapids road in Eganville, Gord Byers, would have turned 93 this year. Our first NHLer maintained a point-a-game average, registering an assist in his only NHL game, the only one of our four pros to have this distinction.

Eganville's best hockey player is 51 today. Can remember playing pickup games with Dale at my outdoor rink back in 1979-1982.

Special mention of the anniversary of a great moment in hockey occurred 50 years ago today when my golf partner Dave Fortier played his first NHL game, per @bhwrites.vs Buffalo. Dave finished +1, took an elbowing penalty, and was named a star with Roger Crozier & Jacques Plante
