Threadfin butterflyfish have an eye-shaped spot on their dorsal fins that helps to confuse would-be predators! These eyespots are a type of self-mimicry — a defence mechanism whereby a less vulnerable part of the body is made to look like the more vulnerable head.

Howdy there, partner 🤠 meet the longhorn cowfish! Also called the horned boxfish, both names refer to the horn-like spines that protrude from its head – and in the wild, it will also charge like a bull if it feels threatened.

Happy International Volunteer Day! Our volunteers educate guests about animals on-site and inspire them to take action to conserve aquatic life. They're a vital part of why the Aquarium is an incredible place to connect with the wonders of wildlife! Thank you, volunteers!

Another new jelly species you may have seen in the Canaccord gallery is the red-eye medusa! If you look really close, you can see the tiny red eyespots at the base of its tentacles! The simple eyes (or ocelli) are basic, but help the jelly to distinguish between light and dark.

Another new animal you can find at the aquarium is the lungfish! This fish, as the name suggests, has the ability to breathe air through a specialized respiratory system! Look for it in the freshwater section of our Tropics gallery.

Giddy up! We're excited to share that you can now sea horses — rather, you can see seahorses — in the Tropics gallery at the Aquarium! The Barbour's seahorse can be found in the first habitat to the left of the Jelly Snow Globe, the same habitat as the chocolate chip sea stars.
