Guide Dog Owner, South East Londoner with Usher Syndrome Type Two, wrongs make me cross, cheese makes me smile

Joined January 2011
Yesterday after eight and a half years of being at my side, Samson, my @guidedogs handed in his harness and retired. I could go on and on and on about all the amazing times we have had and the amazing boy he is. But I shall try to keep it short.

Because of Brexit it looks like guide dog puppies won’t be able to do vital early training in N. Ireland. Pls sign & share to get the government to look into how guide dogs can continue to do their work for EVERY potential guide dog owner across the WHOLE of the UK

“Sorry, I was on mute!” Zoom, Skype, google hangout, FaceTime... we’ve all heard it when using it for work or socialising. It would be amazing if when you find yourself saying it, you donated a couple of £ to support @guidedogs work 😁

And my final also @Royal_Greenwich who do I report overhanging trees and bushes (at face level) as I don’t really fancy fighting nature before 9am everyday! Thank you!

Also @Royal_Greenwich who do I report a dumped mattress to? As I don’t fancy going arse over tit every time I pass it (and according to the nice man that helped me up it’s been there for at least 3-4 weeks)

Day four of being a long cane user and the saying that a cane is an object finder and a guide dog is an object avoider is being rammed home...! On that note @Royal_Greenwich who do I report dumped household rubbish to? As I don’t really want to bring anymore rubbish into my home!

The belief and confidence in myself to at least, give it a go...

Because now I have a new chapter in store. Life as a long cane user, it won’t be the same and 8 years ago I wouldn’t have considered it... but this I think is Samson last and long lasting gift to me....

And now, now I feel lost. I feel lost for all the above and for the weeks and months ahead I know I have without my mate at my side.

He is my South London Thug & neurotic princess. He is my loyal companion but a fickle thing when an ear rub is offered. He can drive me to distraction but also instantly calm me. He is just a dog but in the very same breath he is never just a dog.

He is the reason I am still in work and volunteer - for organisations as well as Guide dogs because he has strengthened my belief that my identity is not just deafblind or guide dog centric.

He has taught me that so much stuff just doesn’t matter, to dust myself off and to carry on.

He has dared me to do things I never dreamt I would be able to do, or to do again. He has reminded me that different doesn’t actually mean wrong, despite societies attempt to make me believe this is so.

Samson has been the constant at my side, reminded me that I am taller, stronger & better than I had started to believe myself to be. That while life hadn’t quite taken the route I had planned, it is fine and often more fun to take the more scenic route to where I want to be.
