On this day in 1972, astronomers — including URochester alum Paul Murdin ’71 (PhD) — confirmed the first black hole: Cygnus X-1. Discovered with the Isaac Newton Telescope, it remains one of the most studied. Murdin later observed the faintest star ever measured in 1977.

With heavy hearts, we share the news that Kevin Parker, the William F. May Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences at @UofR, died in late December at the age of 71. He was a pioneer in the field of ultrasound imaging and a revered faculty member.
