On this day in 1972, astronomers — including URochester alum Paul Murdin ’71 (PhD) — confirmed the first black hole: Cygnus X-1. Discovered with the Isaac Newton Telescope, it remains one of the most studied. Murdin later observed the faintest star ever measured in 1977.
