we’ve lost probably the greatest English-language playwright of the mid 20th century on. he never talked down to his audience - indeed, he made demands of us. I fear we’ll not see his like again. excellent send-off by Bruce Weber. #RIPTomStoppard

Drawing comparisons to the greatest of dramatists, he entwined erudition with imagination in stage works that won accolades on both sides of the Atlantic.

“When I was a young player, I wanted to live in the city, but the Mets said no, I certainly could not live in the City. They were telling me where I could live. Rusty Staub marched into GM Frank Cashen's office and said not only can he live wherever he wants to live, but that he

WSJ with a devastating, intensely-sourced article demonstrating how Trump, Kushner, and Witkoff tried to sellout Ukraine, the U.S., and Europe for money. It's so bad one of our European allies shared evidence of the planned business deals. A must-read. https://t.co/VRYfsRFqdq

The Kremlin pitched the White House on peace through business. To Europe’s dismay, the president and his envoy are on board.

Thanksgiving, 51 years ago. Having bet Elton John that their duet on "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" would never hit #1 — and that if it did he would join Elton on stage in New York City — John Lennon made good on the bet when the single topped the charts, and was brought on
"John came onstage at Madison Square Garden on Thanksgiving night to the biggest ovation I’ve ever heard . . . it was an occasion where grown men, even Scottish road managers who’d seen it all, cried. I’ve never seen anybody get an ovation like that. No one will ever beat that

This is from David Bier, the libertarian Cato Institute’s Director of Immigration Studies.
NEW data I've received: Just 5% of people detained by ICE since October 1 have had violent criminal convictions, 3/4 had no criminal convictions at all. Most "criminals" had immigration, traffic, and vice offenses. Not the "worst of the worst"...

Probably not ideal to publish a long piece on Wednesday night before Thanksgiving… Would you help me spread the word? I wrote about some persistent myths regarding what’s happening in American society and politics we desperately need to discard:
The Myth of a Rightward Realignment Let’s discard some stubborn misconceptions about Trump’s support and what happened in the 2024 election that are obscuring our understanding of a profound de-alignment. New piece: https://t.co/uBQeZbAMqq

NEW: Thunder GM Sam Presti is a huge fan of the legendary historian Robert Caro and frequently cites Caro’s “turn every page” mantra as a guiding light for the powerhouse Thunder. “I am truly touched, if you want to know the truth,” Caro tells ESPN.

As OKC GM Sam Presti formed a Thunder team built for a dynasty, he was inspired by a man who has been working on the same project for more than 50 years.

Excellent clip one of the ur-bands of rock music that imo isn’t given the standing it deserves. Fun seeing so early a version, however staged, of Young (and Stills and Furay and Martin and Palmer).
Buffalo Springfield - Mr. Soul Young sneering at the fame game before real fame had even been tasted, over a bastardised Satisfaction riff. A garage-rock gem on the surreal and shallow nature of stardom. The Smothers Brothers. 1967.

Ron Darling on the Brandon Nimmo trade: “What this means to everyone who wears a Mets uniform — is that one of our most popular players, a guy that delivers each and every season, if he’s not safe, then no one’s safe.”

Here’s the thing: until now, the Cohen f.o. has been pretty ope, a welcome change from the deeply untrustworthy Wilpons. When Scherzer said they told him they were punting on 2024, for example, they didn’t deny it. But the framing of this deal feels like gaslighting. 1/2

To like the Nimmo trade you have to trust that Stearns has a master plan to make this a wowzer of an off-season. Which I get the sense is quite a polarizing sentiment for Mets' fans at the moment.
Column for https://t.co/HXLkX5MaC9: The Mets needed change, yet run prevention only goes so far. Stearns trade of Nimmo for Semien only makes sense if there's a plan to upgrade all facets of ballclub. Could Bellinger be the glue guy the Mets lacked in '25?

Which is why this is more about shipping Nimmo. Semien improves the Mets minimally if at all.
Thoughts on this trade right now for the Mets: Marcus Semien is 35 years old, and has been below-average for the past two seasons. You look to replace Jeff McNeil, but there's really no explanation here to make this trade.

In a saner time - even just a year ago - any of these would be a career ender. But in #lawlesstimes, this is now routine, almost presumed.
Trump bought Boeing bonds while rewarding the company billions in federal contracts. He bought Intel bonds after directing the government to acquire a stake in the company. He bought Meta bonds while pushing AI-friendly policy. Trump isn’t governing — he’s cashing in.

My fave Beatles album, the first I bought with my own money - a double album at that. What a ride! Came with photo portraits of each as they grew into new selves. Fascinating. Fact: Long Long Long isn’t given enough 🌹 🌹 🌹
On this day, November 22, 1968, the double album The Beatles, a.k.a. #TheWhiteAlbum, was released. Thirty songs. No singles. "I remember thinking in the ‘90s that The White Album had obviously become the blueprint. OK Computer couldn’t exist without The White Album, and

The original sin: Five Supreme Court Republican appointees, many helped onto the Court by right-wing billionaires, open the floodgates for unlimited political spending. Then they refuse to police anonymous political spending they know is corrupting. This is the result.

The current concentration of wealth is unlike anything in history. So is billionaires’ involvement in politics.
