I hate to agree with Jamie Carragher, but he is right: this is an incredibly "soft" Chelsea team. We seem to lose the physical battles in key areas regularly. Very little, if any, physicality anywhere. A very easy spine to play against.

• imo, we've seen v. little game model development (tactically, structure, build-up, whatever) to suggest sticking with GP is the right call

There isn't a single bit of control in any phase of play. We can't even defend in possession, which is essentially the end goal of Potter's coaching. Utterly chaotic approach in every third of the pitch. How is this going to improve over time? We look worse the more he's here.

doesn't *just* need a striker (we've been down that road before): we need players _throughout_ the entire squad who are far more clinical. A centre forward isn't some panacea (albeit a huge need). There's such a below average amount of finishing quality in the squad.

Relying on Badiashile, Silva, and (now) Enzo to find incredibly risky passes 90% of the time to bypass the press isn't sustainable. The movement was nonexistent ahead of the man in possession. Distances far too great between the 6 & MM/CG (both poor). Wide players isolated.

This is v. much an "I have never seen this person play" take with data. Enzo is like an Arturo Vidal/Marco Verratti/Edgar Davids type. The guy is a pit bull with a ridiculous amount of technical quality.
So, how would Enzo Fernández stack up versus Chelsea's incumbent midfielders? He's closer to Kovačić in style, though he doesn't dribble anywhere near as much. And his inclusion would still leave Jorginho as the only "enforcer" in midfield. Does he solve the biggest issues?

Finding young, dynamic athletes, who can play with intensity in and out of possession, who are technically comfortable (and capable) of being the aggressor with the ball. Players who are impactful in possession and not passive. Intelligent in the final third.

I don't think this reflects the game state. We've produced much of our xG when in desperation mode, (we had an xG of 0.07 by the 43rd minute against S'oton). Chasing the game, committing way more men forward, & abandoning all tactical shape to create chances isn't great.

We don't even have a simple way of progressing the ball. It should be clear by now that the majority of teams we play against are going to press and/or get bodies behind the ball. There should be some basic movements to help us get through the thirds.

We've had multiple coaches question the mentality of the squad over a number of years and as Tuchel once said re: the squad's inconsistent performance level: "it's the same players." I don't think Potter has shown anything in terms of developing a style of play, but it's tricky.

Actually that's not true. If we extend him, then the book value gets extended over the lifetime of that new contract. It's essentially a small amount, but it isn't £0. Contract extensions are used to lower amortisation amounts.
