UJP-UP denounces the Marcos Jr. administration for preaching justice and a crackdown on corruption while allowing those who have bastardized the public’s coffers to walk free. Such a double standard is no less than an assault on justice itself.

When student journalists and youth leaders — Jacob Baluyot, Tiffany Brillante, Mattheo Wovi Villanueva and most recently, Joaquin Buenaflor — are forced to appear before the police or thrown to jail for demanding accountability, the state’s hypocrisy becomes impossible to ignore.

Yet not a single government official or contractor involved in the flood control corruption scandal has been held accountable or put behind bars.

Now more than ever, the media must stand firmer to hold power to account. More than 200 individuals have been arrested by the Philippine National Police since Sept. 21 for taking part in anti-corruption protests across the country. #StopKorap #KurakotManagot

We call on the state to dismantle the climate of impunity that enables this violence. We urge them to investigate the motivation behind this killing and hold its perpetrators accountable until justice is served.

This adds to the growing list of media workers whose killings remain unresolved. Each name testifies to why the Philippines remains among the most dangerous countries for journalists.

We also stand in solidarity with his family, friends and colleagues who now bear the weight of this unjust loss. Samar was the eighth journalist killed under the administration of Ferdinand Marcos Jr., according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
