Island & Empire is out today! Over many years of research & writing, one critical question persisted: how to narrate a story of connectedness through an island? I wrote this book with the hope of stimulating new conversations on colonialism, violence, displacement & protest.

Island & Empire is one year old already, here photographed next to a rose plucked from the mountains of Sfakia in Crete. As the book turns one year old, I'm happy to share reviews by two historians I admire: Ella Fratantuono and Laura Robson. @stanfordpress

Yiğit Akın'ın Birinci Dünya Savaşı'na dair muazzam çalışması artık Türkçede! Bu kitabı ilgiyle ve heyecanla çevirdim. Umarım siz de öyle okursunuz.

Yiğit Akın, Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nın toplumsal tarihine bakıyor; başka bir deyişle, savaşı salt askerî-siyasi boyutunun ötesinde, toplumsal bir olay olarak inceliyor.

Excited to present Island and Empire today at Northwestern! It's -11 celsius right now but I'm hoping that talking about Crete will make it feel a little warmer.
Please join Northwestern MENA on Monday, January 13 at 12:30 pm in University Hall 201, for a book talk by the Winter Quarter 2025 New Directions in Middle East and North African Studies speaker, Uğur Zekeriya Peçe of LeHigh University, co-sponsored by KMTS.

The best thing about this is that I was on the island with Sam. Happy New Year!.
In the 1890s, Ottoman Crete descended into communal violence between its Christian & Muslim inhabitants. Uğur Z. Peçe explains how this conflict, which he deems a civil war, came about, what it meant for everyday lives, and how it shaped the Empire's end.
