In 1920 Lenin approved the 'Camel operation', two caravans of 100 camels each, which were to carry 30 tons of Kazakh oil thru the snowy steppe from Emba to Uralsk, to reach a railway to Moscow. Before scrounging enough containers, the Reds took Grozny, and the plan was abandoned.
