Vice-Chancellor Peter Mathieson is paid a salary of £340,000, £42,000 in pension contributions, full expenses, a free five-bedroom house in New Town, & not one but two 24-hour chauffeurs. The Uni paid £26,000 to relocate his cat.
When challenged, he said it was "complicated."
Two university bosses were asked by
@ApsanaBegumMP
to justify VCs ‘earning’ £250k+ salaries while some staff take home as little as £15k.
Their contemptuous response: we are just like CEOs, with more responsibility & more complex jobs than you.
Vote YES.

It is our branch policy to demand that
@EdinburghUni
neither host nor facilitate meetings which contain content which is transphobic, biphobic, homophobic or otherwise detrimental to the safety and wellbeing of LGBT+ staff.
We condemn forcefully the racist attacks on our branch officer and comrade
@DrSarahLiu
for standing in solidarity with trans staff, students and others. An injury to one is an injury to all.
According to Vice Principal Gavin McLachlan,
@EdinburghUni
is in "larger than expected surplus" primarily due to cuts made to the
#USS
pension scheme.
"Which is, of course, fantastic news."
Hear for yourself how university management celebrates you losing 35% of your pension.
We are delighted to hear that Ann Henderson, feminist, trade unionist, and social justice activist, has been elected the next Rector of the University of Edinburgh. Congratulations

UCU Edinburgh unreservedly condemns the verbal and attempted physical assault on Julie Bindel as she was leaving campus after speaking at the panel discussion entitled - Women’s Sex-Based Rights: what does (and should) the future hold. 1/2
FYI,
@EdinburghUni
has refused our request to spread strike pay deductions over 3 months, will take the full 8 days' pay in January. We know that Uni of Glasgow will spread deductions over two months. So why are you doing this,
@EdinburghUni
?

Reminder that
@EdinburghUni
reported a £113 million surplus last year.
Last week, VC Peter Mathieson complained that ‘it hurts to be seen as uncaring and unsupportive.’
Maybe try not cutting pay by 20%, pensions by 30%, and hot drinks by 100%.
As such, we have written to the University to ask them to withdraw the use of a UoE venue for what we believe to be a transphobic event timetabled for next week.
The overall percentage of staff on fixed-term contracts at
@EdinburghUni
is 50%. Look at the worst areas. Sustainability cannot be built on precarity.
#ucuRISING
It’s unacceptable for
@EdinburghUni
staff to face delays in being paid what they’re owed for work they’ve done. The university need to pull out all the stops to pay people so that they can pay their rent, bills and meet their financial commitments. 1/4
Know your rights!
re: industrial action over COVID-19
While workers in other countries have struck over this, you shouldn't need to in most cases. You can take action under Health & Safety law without a ballot or giving your employer the right to dock your pay.
The UoE UCU Branch is aware of a teach-out scheduled for Wednesday morning discussing gender and sex. While the branch supports academic freedom, this event will not be held under the UCU banner as it contravenes national and local equality and inclusion policy.
Students at
@uoessps
are staging a sit-in to protest their hot desk spaces being cut from ~50 to ~20 for 1st and 2nd-year soc sci students. This decision allegedly came from surveilling Ph.D. student internet usage to monitor how much they use their office spaces
#phdprecarity
We're just saying *teaching staff* didn't tell students to move across countries during a pandemic to then lock then in accommodation with inadequate mental health support and food packages so bad they made the news.

It's crunch time in UK universities.
@EdinburghUni
today, many final year students will be told they won't see their hard work rewarded with a degree because university leaders and

refuse to negotiate with

. The picture is the same across the UK 🧵
A huge result & a clear message to
@EdinburghUni
: we will fight to defend our pensions & we will win.
81.2% for strike action, 92.9% for ASOS, & 59% turnout overall.
It takes a branch of committed members & organisers to get these numbers. Thank you all!

A massive THANK YOU!!!! to our wonderful members, students, and others who have joined the picket lines and shown solidarity this week. It's been wet and cold, but it's been fantastic to stand together fighting for fair pay, equality, and pensions! ✊❤️ Rest up, see you Monday!
Management will always look to break staff-student solidarity but as
@EdUniStudents
articulate so perfectly in their statement of support below, we know staff working conditions are students' learning conditions.
We know another university is possible.
There's nothing complicated about university management making bank on your stolen labour, your weekend workloads, your sleepless nights, your pensions.
Peter gets a 33% pay hike, we get a 35% pension cut.

Hello
@guardian
Please correct this. UCU Edinburgh has not pulled out of the boycott, merely paused due to where we are currently in the academic calendar. We are still very much committed to action and to winning these disputes.
#OneOfUsAllOfUs
Our students are: excellent, world leading citizens, who care about the future, about fair working conditions. They are critical thinkers and change makers. So why not listen to them
@EdinburghUni
, if you won't listen to staff?
Staff: 35% pensions cuts and repeated real-terms pay cuts. Students: nowhere to live. Yet, there's always money for senior perks. VC even gets his fuel bills and Council Tax paid! Hardship for us, handouts for them. Enough is Enough!

Principal: accepts 33% pay increase when appointed. calls it a "substantial pay cut" given move from "a high-salary, low-taxation environment."
Staff: face 20% pay drop and rising costs
Principal: "Sectoral challenges for thee but not for me."

To be absolutely clear, these jobs should NOT be 8 month posts. Our collective agreement on casualisation w/

'By the start of academic year 2020/21 teaching fellowship contracts will be offered for no less than one year’s duration.'
Jobs: Teaching Fellow, The University of Edinburgh: The School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS) is seeking to appoint x3 full-time teaching fellows for a fixed-term period of approximately 8 months within its Linguistics and English…

Working from home entails additional costs of homeworking (gas, electricity, equipment, etc) and intense workloads. We have raised this with management; we are aware of the emergence of new problems, especially surrounding childcare now that schools have closed. (1/3)
Let's talk about "profoundly regrettable," Peter.
What really hurts, here, is that staff are uncared for & unsupported.
We're striking to protect our colleagues & our students from brutal cuts & precarity.
