Is the "literal sense" of scripture really what we think it is? Do we read the scriptures like Christians did for centuries before us? Is the meaning of text of scripture exhausted by the human author's intent? Or are we simply products of the contemporary hermeneutic zeitgeist?

Nothing is more significant in my preparation to preach than working through the text in its original language. If you want to be an expositor, give yourself to Greek and Hebrew. I suspect that those who think them unimportant don't themselves use them.

Ecclesiastes 1:1–14 has a chiastic structure, and it sets the ordered elements of creation in 1:4–7 across from the "nothing new under the sun" nature of human activity and the human condition in 1:8–11. Bracketing these two sections are 1:1–3 and 1:12–14, (cont.)
