The question right now is not whether AI can be applied to body cameras, but how it will be applied and whose interest. Our hope is this paper can link the discussions in academia, policing, and tech to answer these questions. (5/5).

We also need to ask how footage is governed, analyzed and used. Agencies may use language as a shallow metric, opening the door to their manipulation. Analysts may use opaque models to capture social outcomes. And platforms may operate as gatekeepers, not facilitators. (4/5)

We’ve used NLP to look at patterns in large numbers of body camera recordings: police respect, patterns in escalated traffic stops, or changes following training. There are opportunities to expand NLP tools to uncover many other trends. (3/5)

We usually think about body cameras as an intervention to “civilize” police interactions, or a source of evidence in the courtroom. But these devices capture thousands of encounters each day. How can we capture the richness of these recordings at scale? (2/5).

The common thread: a narrow definition of racism can’t capture how it shapes our lives or how to combat it. This semester, we’ve seen how the push towards homogeneity, exclusion, and inequality happens at different levels. It also means there are many opportunities for change.

Some focused on how organizations —schools, police departments, workplaces— operate. Others spoke to the power of place and history. Some talks identified commonalities across identities, while other presentations approached race as a unique context.

Thank you to our speakers and staff who made our fall @RCGD_ISR speaker series a success! Each of the talks answered the questions of what makes systemic racism systemic, and how structural elements of race can be represented in our discipline.
