The OP, by the way, is a banger. 60s French pop / Shibuya-kei vibes and an intro of the boys' harem that is kinda the only evidence that this is from the same mind that created Happy Mania.

the helmets are those of chūkaku-ha. they are distinguishable by the color of their construction helmets (white), with the name of their faction ("chūkaku" = "中核") right in the middle
playgirl's first mini-album, titled "24 Hours of the Playgirl," was released on september 10, 2009. the mini-album contains fun, twee-ish tunes reminiscent of 60s/70s bubblegum and indie pop.
hailing from hongdae, the epicenter of korean indie music scene, they formed in 2009 under 'beatball records', a celebrated korean independent music label.
timothy orchestra / morning
(2007)
an obscure shibuya-kei tune with a killer chorus and a melting holidays-coded album art
(and credits to anya for ripping it 😎)
ahh... the joys of the early 2019, discovering shohei amimori through this MV, which then led me to the underrated, maximalist and super lush glitch pop idm gem that is 'sonasile', and hakushi hasegawa, who was gaining recognition for their newly-released batshit insane EP
among the group's producers ("playboys") were jinma and a japanese producer named bob.
jinma was the leader of 'the smiles', a 60s sunshine pop revival group of which kim so-ra of playgirl was also briefly a member.
(check out the smiles' album here!
)
the members, college students seemingly in their early 20s, were:
kim sora (left, the leader),
go eunbyeol (middle),
lee danbi (right).
the members also had profiles/introductions that showcased their personalities. those are available here:
in 2020, she began releasing music as 'print print shop' (PPS). also intended as an art project, she combines her photography work and art with music, largely produced in collaboration with yoo jiwan. PPS' music is inspired by older korean music genres, such as pongjjak and trot.
a few months ago, friendly spoon (フレスプ) released their debut album 'Friends', and as recently as april 8, it became available on streaming services!
friendly spoon (フレスプ) formed as a trio in 2018 and comprises takahiro ishigami, takumi inoue, and vocalist himeno tama.
yes, mama ok? weren't the only ones from the LD&K (Living, Dining & Kitchen) Records label to collaborate with nissan to create a CM tune. LD&K ended up releasing a CD with the CM music that some of their artists (e.g. yes, mama ok?, roboshop mania) produced for nissan.
she also wrote a book in 2010 after being contacted out-of-nowhere by a writer on cyworld. in the book, she shares her experiences with selected music (from margo guryan, carole king, to pizzicato five, sugar babe, and many more) and her life.
just an interesting tidbit:
at the end of the video of casker's live at banjul (2003-04-20), there's a performance of 1103 with the breakbeat instrumental removed, turning it effectively into a bossa delight
she also discusses her time in the smiles and playgirl, and the hardships she faced while being in these groups, including heavier topics (e.g. sexual harassment)
what's also worth checking out is the so-called image album/character album created for sugar sugar rune, titled "maison de chocola", both for y. konishi's work and moyoco's stylish illustrations:
(the seventh track is just 😍)
while a self-proclaimed revivalist group of the 80s showa-era idols, it could be argued that their image and music aligned more closely with the revivalist movements of the 60s and 70s, which were prevalent during the 90s and 00s.
kim sora would give several interviews following her return to music as 'print print shop', in which she discusses her past in-depth. one of those interviews is with the singer-songwriter chun yongsung. in the interview, she talks about the origin of playgirl and how they formed.
these are themed compilations curated by mintpaper, a korean event organizer (known for their music fests, such as GMF) and a label primarily focused on the promotion of indie artists. these compilations were created in collaboration with 18 other labels representing the artists.
the times of retro, stylish 00s k-indie are long gone, with alternative music scenes having moved on to different, trendier sounds. however this could change soon, as we are now seeing with the gradual reemergence of 90s and 00s subcultures and fads.
playgirl disbanded in 2011, following the reasons stated during the interview. although their time together was short, they have earned a legacy for being one of the most unique girl groups to come out of south korea.
kim sora later re-emerged as a singer in a duo called 'side ponytail,' together with her friend and labelmate from beatball, cho yongseok of the one-man band 'sweet soap'.
i saw an oomf's oomf's request on my home page, in which they asked about song recommendations that sound like "elevator music". i proceeded to write about 15-20 replies worth of information before changing my mind and discarding it right after i finished writing it
they gained recognition after being featured on you hee-yeol's sketchbook and went on to release a christmas-themed single in december, along with an announcement of plans for a second mini-album release.
however, this never came to fruition.
2. keichi & the coconut groove
a self-proclaimed "shibuya-kei in the era of streaming" band, formed in october 2022.
the members are:
keichi kumagai (vo. / cho. / ac. gt. / ba.)
haruka kawakami / harun (key.)
ryo ichihara (gt.)
kyogo kameyama (dr.)
and it manages to do all of that while maintaining its utter, delightful playfulness and quirkiness. love, love and love sonasile.
oh yeah, and not to mention the OBVIOUS sakamoto influence in this (and other of his works), as shohei amimori is also ryuichi sakamoto's protégé
ymo? and roboshop mania weren't the only shibuya-kei acts to collaborate with nissan either. pizzicato five themselves have also collabed with nissan, slightly changing the lyrics to 'baby portable rock' for the campaign:
i love how misleading the opener is: a warm piano composition that then resolves into ambiguity. and then the synth loop begins to slowly creep in. what comes next is some of the most texture-rich and compositionally dense pop works to come out of japan
now where yes, mama ok? and tomoko kataoka fit in this? their collab would happen on a rare expansion pack for the game titled 'WINTER EDITION', in which they contributed a theme song that played upon launching the game
@gooddaymp3
oh you will definitely like this!! plenty of techno kayō gets weird (in a good way), usually because hosono or sakamoto were involved in the production 😭
this mini from 1986 is one of my favourites from the genre, it's more on the artsy side:
while kataoka's contributions end here, the contributions of yes, mama ok? do not. the tower port for sega saturn (and 3DO) has its own theme song, composed by takeshi kongochi of yes, mama ok?, and performed by chocolate fashion.
(full song here: )
speaking of coincidental planet (the quoted music video), that song comes from amimori's more accessible second album, pata music (recircle and ajabollamente are stunning, now forever is a banger, climb downhill 1 and decadent utopia are fucking crazy)
1. nagakumo
a 4-piece band from osaka, formed in january 2021.
the members are:
saya komono (vo. / gt.)
reiji onishi (gt. / cho.)
teppei omura (ba.)
so hoda (dr.)
i have to admit that it's also my fault that i end up using all the effort and free time after work on music league picks instead
in other words, i'm too LOCKED IN on this music league shit
'Friends' comprises 10 tracks with a total runtime of 31 minutes. takahiro ishigami handled the lyrics, composition, and arrangement for all songs on the album, except for the 6th track, which was arranged by minami kitasono!
one more contribution of yes, mama ok? happens to be in the version before WINTER EDITION, called LIMITED EDITION, in which '去年の今日も' from their best-of selection album 'modern living' would play during a christmas cutscene:
i would like to also give a heads up to another takahiro ishigami's project called 'Soft Legato', a duo comprised of him and kyosuke izumi. they have recently released their first mini-album, drawing influences from 60s pop, 🇧🇷 music, psych, and more!
ymo? is still active to this day, occasionally performing at venues. the last new material from them was over 20 years ago (not counting 'a rolling stone' from the CEO reissue). nevertheless they have left a lasting legacy as a shibuya-kei band.
this song ('wild turkey') would end up being released on CD a year later, although without kataoka's vocals:
the version with kataoka's vocals, on the other hand, would be officially released in the 10th anniversary reissue of their final album, CEO.
