Hagwons are one of those things that make more sense once you see them up close. Very Korean, full of trade-offs, hard to label. What are your thoughts on Hagwons?

More than anything, I find myself hoping for quieter conversations at home: What do you want to learn? What do you enjoy? And how can hagwons be just one option among many?

When chosen thoughtfully, hagwons can offer kids a safe, comfortable space to learn: academically, physically, and creatively. The one part I struggle with is the pressure to move too far ahead, too early.

Hagwons arenโ€™t disappearing anytime soon. Theyโ€™re deeply embedded in Korean society. And you canโ€™t really see the entire hagwon system as simply โ€œgoodโ€ or โ€œbad.โ€

Yes, there are hagwons that prepare kids to enter other hagwons that specialize in studying ahead. You could call them โ€œpre-pre-learning hagwons.โ€ When you zoom out, it can feel a bit surreal.

And then thereโ€™s ์„ ํ–‰ ํ•™์Šต: studying ahead of grade level. Itโ€™s common for a 5th grader to study middle school material already. Some schools even assume this kind of pre-learning has happened.

Another factor is social pressure. In theory, parents choose based on their childโ€™s needs. In reality, choices are often shaped by what everyone else is doing, or fear of falling behind.

That said, things get complicated. One issue is packed schedules. Multiple hagwons + homework = less sleep for kids. That has a ripple effect on everything.

My own kids have gone to swimming, art, piano, and now basketball once a week. They enjoy it. They stay active or creative. And family evenings are still family time. In that sense, hagwons can be a quiet win-win.

Personally, I donโ€™t think hagwons are inherently good or bad. One clear advantage is structure. If chosen well, hagwons can be systematic, efficient, and relatively affordable.

For many people outside Korea, this is surprising. And often, the first reaction is negative. But the reality is a bit more complicated than it looks.

If you spend some time in Korea, especially if you have kids, youโ€™ll notice one thing very quickly. "Hagwons" (ํ•™์›) are everywhere. These are private after-school academies.
