We are not asking to live like kings. We are merely asking to be paid a wage that does not treat journalism like a job you do until you find better work. We only want to be paid enough so we don’t see the talent at our papers bleed away.

McClatchy has told us that all of our communities are different. Let’s see what the facts tell us. The @uscensusbureau reports the median household income as: $75,867 in Thurston County $76,438 in Pierce County $72,046 in Benton County $65,420 in Whatcom County

What @mcclatchy offered was to continue its two-tiered system of paying journalists. They want to pay journalists @BhamHerald & @TriCityHerald less than those @thenewstribune & @theolympian. But we’re one union & we deserve to be paid fairly no matter what community we live in.

The negotiators are continuing to treat our papers as if somehow all of our reporting on rising costs and tight housing markets isn’t real.

We have been negotiating with @mcclatchy since June 2021. We submitted our proposal for fair pay in March. We waited two months for their reply. We were finally presented with an offer on May 9. To say it was underwhelming is an understatement. It was insulting.

The Tacoma News Tribune, the Bellingham Herald, the Olympian and the Tri-City Herald journalists formed a union - @WaNewsGuild - about a year and a half ago. We did it because we wanted a voice. We wanted to make sure that McClatchy couldn’t continue to dismiss the Northwest.
