#OTD in 1823, #MaryAnning discovered a fossil in the Lias between Lyme Regis and Charmouth, and excavated it that evening and the next morning. Although unsure of what she had found, after some preparation work she realised that it was the first complete example of Plesiosaurus.

Storm Bert hits the UK today, the bicentenary of the Great Storm of 22-23 Nov 1824 which caused widespread destruction along the S coast of England. #MaryAnning told a friend of damage in Lyme Regis and to her brother's house. Contrary to some later accounts, hers was undamaged.

#MolluscMonday: Ammonites (now Microderoceras) birchi, as figured and first described by James Sowerby in 1821 in 'Mineral Conchology'. The specimen, from the early #Jurassic of #LymeRegis, was then in the collection of Col.Thomas Birch who had probably bought it from #MaryAnning

A great new edition of the classic @GeolSoc volume on the geology of #Scotland, including a chapter on 'milestones in the history of Scottish geology' by @HOGGroup chair Duncan Hawley and me (writing about something other than #MaryAnning for a change). #HistoryofGeology.

#OTD in 1827, Oxford geologist #WIlliamBuckland wrote to a friend that #MaryAnning was working high up on the unstable cliffs at #LymeRegis in the Lias Pentacrinite Bed, excavating a large slab of #crinoid fossils for him, 'if she does not break her neck in the operation'.

In this great article, Mark shows us the distinctive appearance of the fossil-collecting Colonel Birch, friend and generous supporter of #MaryAnning and her mother. He auctioned his collection of #Lias #fossils in 1820 and gave the proceeds to help the then-struggling Annings.

In the latest issue of @HOGGroup magazine GeoHistories, Hugh Torrens and I describe two 'new' silhouette portraits of #MaryAnning which hint at a perhaps more fashionable fossilist than previously thought.

Portraits of #MaryAnning No.5: cut blackened paper #silhouette, c.1831. Artist unknown but probably an amateur cutter within the family of London physician AR Sutherland. His son attended the geology lectures of #WilliamBuckland in 1831 describing Mary's Lias fossil discoveries.

Portraits of #MaryAnning No.4: cut black paper #silhouette, 1841. Artist unknown, but perhaps an amateur cutter in the family of London physicians Dr AR Sutherland (1782–1861) or his son Dr AJ Sutherland (1811–1867) both of whom were Fellows of @GeolSoc.

Portraits of #MaryAnning No.3: an 1876 wood engraving after a photograph taken in #LymeRegis of the 1842 portrait and published in a gardening magazine. At the time the 1842 painting hung in the parlour of Thomas and Patience Jerrard, the in-laws of Mary Anning's nephew, Albert.

Portraits of #MaryAnning No.2: an 1850 pastel copy by BJM Donne (1831–1928) of the 1842 painting, but with an ammonite at her feet and a clearer rendering of the coastline. In 1875 it was purchased by the 3rd Earl of Enniskillen who presented it to @GeolSoc where it hangs today.

Portraits of #MaryAnning No.1: Oil on board, probably by William Grey (1815–85), painted from life, #LymeRegis, February 1842. It may have hung in Anning's shop until her death in 1847 when it passed to her brother. In 1935 his granddaughter presented it to @NHM_London.
